5.2.2 New Testament

Tradition history is also part of a broad approach to studying NT biblical traditions and their development from oral stages to written texts that includes source, form, and redaction criticism. The same underlying assumptions and key concepts that informed the development of tradition history for the OT are brought to a tradition-historical study of a NT text. Charting the development of tradition history as a distinct NT method is not really possible due to its deep integration with NT form and redaction criticism.38 However, the study of the origin and development of traditions behind NT texts has begun to move beyond both form criticism and redaction criticism by incorporating insights from social-scientific research.39 The study of NT traditions, therefore, has moved toward more interdisciplinary models built from orality studies, media criticism, and other social sciences.40
