CHAPTER ELEVEN

The walk back downtown sobered her. With no real direction to go in, she ended up wandering back toward Logan Tower. She intended to find a phone to call Kris to come get her. The thought of moving far away teased her mind but she shook her head. There was a more complicated problem in front of her. Warren was hiding something more. Suddenly her assurance in her previous convictions was severely weakened. Could it be her gut was wrong? That Warren might have… but why? What reason would he have?

Beau’s black car stopped in front of her as she was crossing the street, throwing off her train of thought.

“Are you OK?” Beau asked.

“Yup.”

“You’re walking around alone.”

“…Kind of.”

“Don’t you think you should hang out with someone?”

“Huh.”

“Don’t give me huh. Get in. Besides, I could use your help in this case for Mrs. Johnson. He’s just given her a visit, threatening to take those kids from her. We need to get him now before he does something bad.”

I blew out a breath. “You want me to try to sell drugs to a crack addict?”

“No. Nothing that bad.”

It was tempting to tell him off but she couldn’t help think of Mrs. Johnson and the little baby she had in her hands. She wondered how many other little kids were at risk. Maybe Celeste could put up with him for a few hours. It was just for Mrs. Johnson though, she told herself. She wouldn’t let Beau get under her skin again. Besides, maybe she’d figure out exactly what he was up to with Leah. It would at least get rid of one problem.

She got in the car and fell into an awkward silence.

“We’ll wait until sunset before zeroing in,” he said. He looked at the folder of pictures under her arm. “You have been busy.”

“There’s usually work to be done.”

He smiled. “For a girl with a rich father, you really don’t know how to play the spoiled princess. You’re supposed to let other people work while you sit in a commercial or something.”

“I’d rather be Batman.”

“He was rich.”

“But he wasn’t spoiled. He had a lot to do.”

“True.” He reached out and patted her knee. She mustered a look and he moved his hand away. “You OK?”

“You’ve asked me that already.”

“You’ve never really answered. How was the research? And why didn’t you call? I went to look for you. I was worried.”

She didn’t want to reveal this so soon, but she was never good at keeping secrets in her heart. It was bubbling inside her and it was too difficult to pin down her curiosity. “Leah Sanders was there.”

A silence hung.

“And?” he said.

“She mentioned you.”

He did the sexy eyebrow arch thing. “She did?”

“She mentioned you’d been to see her every day since you’ve been in town.”

“Huh.” He sat back, taking his hand back and rubbing his face.

“She was talking like she was leaving Sanders. What’s that about?”

“Something tells me she’s was more interested in ruffling feathers.”

She blinked. “What does that mean? Was she lying?”

“She wasn’t lying.
