Chapter Seventeen

Amy

The doorbell ringing down the hall got me out of my stupor. I stood from my bed, struggling with the sheets while my hair fell in a tangled mess over my eyes. The incessant ringing of the doorbell didn’t do good things for my brain cells. I shoved the strands away with my palm so I could see better before stumbling over a pile of clothes on the floor.

My head throbbed in some sort of silent protest. I clumsily kicked the twisted sheet from my ankle and realized my world spun a little. Everything seemed to lean slightly to the right, or was it me who was leaning slightly to the side?

More ringing echoed through the house as I shuffled down the hallways, preparing myself to ward off whoever was on the other side of the door when it hit me.

Leo was in town.

Nate and I made out last night.

As I pushed my fingertips into the dull ache on the side of my head, the journey to the door felt more like an epic odyssey than a simple task of answering a door.

I made my way through the family room as the sun sprayed into the room, and I shielded my eyes from the atrocious intruder known as daylight. It was just all too much.

The dinging.

The kissing.

The drinking.

The kissing.

The dinging.

“Alright, alright.” I stumbled toward the entry when I saw something that literally stopped me in my tracks.

Sprawled on the family room couch was the hulk of a sheriff, sleeping so peacefully with a pillow plopped over his head, a navy blanket stretched over his clothed, muscular body, and two feet wrapped in black wool socks. The sight brought a smile to my lips as the doorbell rang again.

As I made my way to the door, the memories from last night crashed into me with a vividness that made my stomach dip and rise like a rollercoaster—the flirtation, laughter, the conversation.

For the first time in my life, I felt heard by a man, and I didn’t know what to make of it.

And the kiss, oh… the kiss that started as something flirty and playful and quickly turned into something intense and deep like a need for a special type of comfort we’d both craved.

I took a deep breath, wrapped my fingers around the handle, and flung the door open to see a deputy. He removed his cowboy hat and placed it on his chest.

“Ma’am, I hate to be a bother, but I saw the sheriff’s vehicle outside, and we need his assistance with something.”

My eyes widened, and I stood frozen as a hot flash of embarrassment mixed with the recognition of what it looked like happened last night.

“He’s on the couch. I’ll wake him up,” I said, feeling my cheeks burning. “Nothing happened. He just stayed on the couch.”

“None of my business either way,” he said with a twinkle in his eyes.

I’d gone to so much trouble trying to avoid bringing attention to myself, and then I went and almost slept with the sheriff, one of the most well-connected men in town.
