MAR. 21, NEWARK

This is all so much fun for Microchip except for one thing—his parents.

They’re beginning to get suspicious as to why he’s never there when they call and also why they’re not getting his report cards from school anymore or any of his papers and this is, of course, as you know, that he is not at Most Virgin Lady High School but instead he’s on the New Jerseys with me now but we don’t want them to know that or they will make him come home immediately and, as Microchip says, “lock me in a room with Dick Gregory.”

He is playing so many minutes and doing so well that a lot of people want to know about him, especially the sportswriter gentlemen and women, but he won’t speak to them because he’s scared they’ll find out that his real name is not David “Microchip” Lawrence—Microchip says that David Lawrence is the name of the guy who made the high school varsity the year Michael Jordan didn’t—but is really Mustafa Unity Smith.

He’s worried but not that worried since his parents don’t allow ESPN in the house and they throw away the sports section immediately each morning and, as Microchip once said, “all their friends are people with a New Yorker stuck up their butts.” And that is one New Yorker I don’t want to meet.

But you never know what could happen and so today, Microchip said, “I gotta plan. And I need your help.”

Microchip’s idea is a very clever one. He is going to start taking e-mail courses from Howard University and then forwarding his parents the work through a friend in Boulder, so it will look like he is there and not here.

And I said I had no idea what he was talking about and he said, “It’s all on this Web site here.”

Naturally, I got very excited as I love web sites and consider myself an expert on web sites but I guess Microchip and I were talking about two different things because he was pointing to his computer.

Anyway, he’s going to take Black Issues, Black History, and Black Issues in History, and also Herpetology, which is the study of snakes, and which he wants me to do all the work. Can you believe the guy?

“Will you?” he asked.

I picked him up and hugged him until he pulled my hair to let me know he was done being hugged and a maid knocked to see if there was some kinda problem.

I can’t wait for the first workbook to arrive.
