After Karyn left, Leigh Ann took advantage of the time before Mark was due home and went on a little reconnaissance mission in her husbandâs office only to find his desk drawers locked and his computer passwords changed.
Frustrated, she tried to regroup.
She needed to talk to Colby. It would be tricky not to let on, but he might know something that sheâd find helpful. Information was power.
Often Colby failed to pick up when she phoned. At times, sheâd have to make multiple tries and leave a scad of messages before heâd call her back. She should remind him who bought his phone and paid his bill. Luckily, today he answered on the second ring.
âHi, Mom. Whatâs up?â
âNothing in particular. Just wanted to hear your voice and check in.â
There was a slight pause on the other end of the phone. âWe talked two days ago, Mom. Not much has changed.â
Her son had registered for summer school and remained in Seattle against her wishes. âItâll look good on my record if I apply myself and finish my undergrad a bit early,â heâd explained. Never mind Colby was only a sophomore and wouldnât be applying for engineering school for at least two years.
âHowâd you do on your physics exam, sweetheart?â
âOh, I did okay. The test covered material the professor never mentioned in class and I have yet to find in the textbook any reference to tachyons.
âTachyons?â
âYeah, something having to do with particles that are faster than light.â
She should warn him not to fall into a pattern of excuses. Then again, she couldnât risk him tuning her out. Prodding him to be a better student wasnât why sheâd called.
âSon, have you talked to your father lately?â she ventured, hoping to ease into a conversation that would mine any information her son might have that would shed light on her precarious situation.
âNot lately. Why?â
She couldnât help herself. She threw caution aside and got defensive. âWhy? Canât a mom just ask her son a simple question? Iâm simply wondering if youâve checked in with your dad. Thatâs not exactly pryingâjust being interested. Youâre my son and I want to know about youâabout schoolâabout you and your dad and if youâve talked lately. Thatâs not out of reason.â
Goodness, she sounded like a blathering idiot.
âMom, youâre being weird.â
She paused, took a deep breath. âSorry, youâre right.â She laughed his comment off. âIâIâm distracted. The housekeeper is over an hour late this morning and she just pulled up. Iâm probably going to have to let her go. Sheâs just not punctual. Thatâs how everything starts. First theyâre late, then their work gets shabby. Really, itâs so hard to find domestic help here in Sun Valley. Too much competition for the good ones.â
âMom!â Colby interrupted. âLook, I need to go. Class starts in a few.â His tone was impatient, leaving her no choice really but to end the conversation.
âOhâsure. I understand honey. Iâll call tonight. We can talk then.â
She clicked off her phone and slid it into her pocket.
Well, that was a waste of effort.
