CHAPTER TEN

“I hate when we don’t get any loot.” Cassie spat on the ground as she marched away from the field.

JaKobi chased her, but Tim turned to smile at his girlfriend. “It wasn’t all bad. Ten gold and we had thirty people added to our side quest.”

They were almost there, a few more people, and they’d earn the bonus.

ShadowLily gave Tim a quick kiss before grabbing his hand and dragging him toward the exit. “Should be pretty easy for us to round up the last people.”

Lorelei was walking behind them. “Do you think we should try to free over one hundred?”

Tim stopped walking as his brain kicked into action. The real question wasn’t if they should keep freeing people. It was whether continuing to release them would provide their group with any additional benefit. If the antidote was as cheap and easy to make as Ernie said, there wasn’t a reason to hold back. If they died for some reason, Tim would order another batch of the potion for Ernie to make before they came back.

“I say we free as many people as we can, but let’s not go out of our way to look for side quests.” Tim’s feet started moving again.

Lorelei pointed ahead at JaKobi, who was kneeling in the dirt, rubbing the earth through his fingers. “What do you think he’s doing?”

“Probably trying to figure out how to light dirt on fire.” ShadowLily picked up the pace. “Let’s hurry before he hurts himself.”

When the trio grew closer, the ember wizard looked up at them with hopeful eyes. “Do you think they have a farming simulator? I love growing things.”

Tim helped his best friend up. “Simulator, no, but you could always buy a farm and grow whatever you want.”

“That sounds awesome.” JaKobi’s hands burst into flame, cleaning off any residual dirt. “You know, after we're done saving the world.”

Tim gave him a high five. “Time to catch up with Cassie.”

The four of them hurried to catch the tank already waiting by the main trail. It didn’t take a genius to see Cassie was ill at ease, but after such a resounding victory, her mood seemed out of place. This was about more than loot, and they needed to get to the bottom of it before they continued.

Moving next to Cassie, Tim got her attention by gently nudging his shoulder into hers. “What up, girl?”

“Those people were getting fed to a giant bug, and they had no idea.” Cassie kept her eyes focused off in the distance. “Just seems kinda sad, you know?”

JaKobi moved up on the other side of her. “It would’ve kept going on if we didn’t put an end to it.”

“We turned that fucker into bug paste.” Lorelei smashed her hands together.

ShadowLily laughed. “Like the opening of MIB, sometimes you're the windshield, and sometimes you’re the bug.”

“At least this one was wearing a stump instead of an Edgar suit.” Cassie huffed. “Let’s go track these sisters down and put an end to this.”

She walked down the path, and the rest of them fell into their normal battle formation.
