CHAPTER TWENTY-TWO

HIS DARK GAZE pinned me to the chair. He shut the door behind him and looked me over. Then, he pulled a knife from somewhere beneath his silver cloak.

A pain pierced me beneath my heart.

Was he going to torture me? Had the Alpha discovered the truth and decided this was the cruelest fate of all?

If so, she was right.

I didn’t know how I would stand it.

Vixor paced around me, pausing at my back. His gloved fingers brushed mine, and then I heard a rasp of steel against rope, and the band around my wrists loosened. I brought my arms up as the rope slid away, and Vixor strode to the desk, the knife disappearing beneath his cloak again.

He sat.

We looked at each other. His gaze scorched me. He looked almost frightened for a moment before he tucked the emotion away behind an impenetrable, moody expression, the same one he’d worn when he’d questioned me after the whipping in my village.

What had happened? Was I going to be tortured?

I cleared my throat.

“Why am I here, Vixor?”

“I have decided,” Vixor said slowly, “that it is in the best interest of the Alpha that you be questioned.”

He leaned forward, putting both elbows on the desk.

I swallowed hard.

“After all,” he said. “I am certain you must have ties to the Order of the Crimson. Yes?”

My mouth was dry. I shook my head.

Vixor opened the desk drawer and withdrew a length of fabric. A red cloak. He held it aloft, and my chest tightened.

My father’s cloak!

“This is yours,” he said, never breaking eye contact. “Is it not?”

His mouth curled downward. He knew it was mine.

I stared hungrily at the fabric. I’d thought it lost forever, burned by Mother Shade or something equally awful. How had he gotten it? And was there any point in denying something we both knew was true?

“I do not belong to the Order of the Crimson,” I said. “I am a Chosen, here to serve the Alpha.”

I almost choked on the words, but I said them anyway. This was a game of some sort. A deadly dance. I would play along until I understood what he was doing, why I was here.

A muscle in his jaw twitched. Clearly, he didn’t believe me.

He laid the cloak down.

“Why have you set your sights upon Lord Kryf?” he asked.

“Kryf found me,” I replied evenly. “I didn’t even know his name.”

“And you expect me to believe that? That you aren’t trying to infiltrate his family? It is known that Kryf and his ilk are a weak link in the Sworn ranks. Susceptible to the likes of the wretched Crimson Order.” Vixor leaned over the desk.

He was furious. I realized it with a shock. Furious, but not at me.

He was angry about Kryf. Not at me.

In fact, I didn’t think I was about to be tortured at all.

What did this mean?

“You’re angry about the match,” I said.

Vixor’s nostrils flared slightly. “Yes, I’m angry. It’s a terrible political situation. Kryf and a potential member of the Order of the Crimson.
