Rhett
With apprehension, Rhett knocked on her sisterâs front door, eyeing up the colourful display of flowers in the window boxes whilst she waited.
Vivien opened the door, out of breath and looking flustered. âOh, hello.â
âAm I interrupting?â
âNo, come in. I was just upstairs packing, or rather, fighting with a suitcase.â
Rhett entered the living room, feeling uncomfortable already. âWhere are you going?â
âVivienâs smile lit up her whole face. âScotland, with Finn. Weâre going to Honeydale.â
Why not? Itâs not as if your life has problems.
Rhett mentally chastised herself at her own bitterness. She needed to get over the resentment lurking inside her. âI want to talk to you.â
âSure.â Vivien gestured towards the settee. âSit down.â
Talking seemed like a good idea when Rhett was walking across the field towards her sisterâs house, but now she wasnât so sure.
Oh, just get on with it.
âIâm here to apologise to you, Viv. I shouldnât have told you.â
âActually, you should have told me years ago.â
âI promised Mum.â
Vivien leaned further into the settee, crossing her legs and arms. âI had a right to know.â
âOh, please! Havenât you noticed? We may have been raised by the same parents, but we lived two separate lives. Yours didnât include a suicidal mother. You didnât even know your own dad was a narcissist. He certainly manipulated you.â
âI thought you came here to apologise. Seems to me youâre still being spiteful.â
Rhett sighed deeply, stopping herself from shaking her head in annoyance. âIâm not picking on you. I just need you to know it wasnât all moonbeams and rainbows in our house.â
âI know that. Despite what you think, I did notice things. A lot may have been kept from my eyes, but I know we didnât have a family life like the Silvers. I just thought our parents were more reserved.â
âAnd what about when Mum could hardly stand?â
Vivien shrugged slightly and lowered her gaze to her lap. âI figured sheâd had too much wine at dinner. Letâs face it, she liked her wine.â
âYes, to block out her misery. He did nothing but torment her, and I had to keep clearing up the mess. Viv, our dad was a master manipulator. Everything he did had an agenda, and the only reason he left you alone was because he didnât need anyone else to feed off. He was kept full by draining me and Mum.â
Vivien leaned a touch closer, twiddling her fingers around the sleeve of Finnâs red sweatshirt flopped over the back of the settee. âIâm sorry for whatever he did to you, and while I donât appreciate the way you spat the truth at me, Iâm glad I know now. You didnât need to come here to say sorry.â
âIâm sorry for how I told you. I still donât know why I did after all this time. I donât know why I told Heath the truth about our wedding day.â She shook her head at herself and slumped back. âI donât know whatâs happening to me lately. I feel as though Iâm cracking up or something.
