Winona paced up and down in the living room.

“What are you doing, trying to lose some weight?” Little Dove asked.

“What? Do I need to lose weight? Am I fat?”

“Not as fat as many women your age. People just seem to get heavy when they get older. It must be a fact of life. Except for Silver Wind. He still has the body of a young man. What was it like to kiss him?”

Winona threw back her head and let out a noise that was a cross between a growl and a muted scream. She then exited to the kitchen without responding to Little Dove’s question.

Little Dove shrugged. “I was just curious. Sheesh!” She returned to the book she was reading.

Once in the kitchen, Winona headed straight for the refrigerator. As she was eyeballing the contents to figure out what looked good to her, a quiet voice came to her.

What are you doing?

She ignored it and opened the crisper.

Are you looking for comfort food? You just ate a short time ago. Do you think that eating more will help you with your weight?

She closed the door without retrieving anything. “OK, Lord, I get the point. Do you think I’m fat too? Isn’t what’s on the inside more important that the exterior?”

Of course, my child, but that doesn’t mean you should neglect the maintenance of the temple of the Holy Spirit.

“Are you saying that you don’t like me being overweight either, Lord? Does that mean you love me less?”

My love is not lessened, but my pleasure in you may be diminished by your choice to feed your body instead of your spirit.

Winona stood there for a moment in contemplation. Then she retreated to her bedroom where she knelt by the side of the bed and spent the next fifteen minutes in prayer. When she arose, she went back to the living room where Little Dove was still reading.

“Are you going running tomorrow, Little Dove?”

“Have to get five miles in.”

“I’m going with you.”

Little Dove laughed. “Surely you joke.”

“I’m not going to run with you – yet. Tomorrow I’m going to use your bicycle and ride beside you. And I’m going to start running myself, but I know I can’t cover five miles.”

“I doubt you can make it one mile.”

“Maybe not on the first try. But I will build up to it. I used to be a runner you know.”

“Did they have a track team way back then?”

“Way back? You talk as if I was a classmate of Sitting Bull. I might be older than you, but that doesn’t make me old. I used to be pretty fast you know.”

“Grandpa claims he could run like the wind. Of course not like Silver Wind.”

“I thought you were over your crush on Peter now that you have Marcus in your life.”

The teenager shrugged. “You never forget your first love.”

“And you shouldn’t forget to respect your elders. Starting tomorrow you’re going to have more reason to respect me. I’m going into training.”

“For a race?”

Winona rubbed her chin.
