Chapter Seventeen

y body is already starting to ache, but in the best way. I feel like I’ve had a brutal workout, and I guess in a way I have. Jared made sure of that in PE class this morning.

Something is different about him today, which has me on edge. Yeah, he seemed like a loose cannon last week, struggling with some sort of demon while trying to get my attention, but now he’s not trying to get my attention at all.

Sure, he paid me attention in PE this morning, but I quickly realised he was taking his aggression out on me. I had to let him. If I didn’t, he’d deliver it to someone else who couldn’t handle it and he’d probably end up in more trouble than he’s already in.

Because of me.

At recess, I did the cowardly thing and hid in the girls’ toilets. I figure I owe Jared that much. Hopefully out of sight, out of mind applies here, and he was able to spend his spare time laughing with his mates, instead of seeing me and being reminded of Pike’s dead body, or the fact that I’ve managed to get him fast tracked into the Marx Crew.

In English, I arrive to find Jared sitting with Marcus, leaving Lexi to sit at my table. He didn’t even look up as I walked to sit down, and he stayed quiet the whole lesson. So, naturally, I went back to the girls’ toilets to hide again at lunch.

I guess he’s finally getting the hint that I’m not the right girl for him to show an interest in. He knows now that I’m only here for a short time. He knows I’m not a good person. So now, he can move on and find a nice girl. Someone he deserves.

The only other interesting thing about today was Abbey in our Textiles class. Normally, she’s so withdrawn and as quiet as a mouse. It’s hard to remember she’s even there half the time. Today, however, she looked distressed. She very publicly wore a split lip, and if I’m not mistaken, a slightly swollen eye that makeup is working its magic to hide a bruise, I bet. She was also paying no attention to her work, instead texting frantically on her phone, and when the teacher asked her to put her phone away, she packed up her things and ran out of class.

Whatever is going on in her life, it seems to be escalating. I can’t help but feel worried about her. She seems like she would be a nice person, but something is going on that is killing her on the inside.

Maybe I should look into her a little more.

Since I skipped dance last night, deciding to take the extra time to chat with Travis, and then feeling unbelievably spent afterwards, I jump on the town bus after school and arrive at the studio with plenty of time to spare. I take my time getting changed, wearing black leggings and a black long sleeve wrap crop.
