CHAPTER 26

TINKA

The phone rang, but I ain’t recognize the number.

“Hello?” I said.

“Hello, can I speak to Tinka?” the strange voice said.

“This is she,” I said, confused.

“Hey, Tinka. How you doing?”

“Who’s this?”

“It’s me, Nine.”

My heart froze.

“Hello?” he said again.

“Hey.” Of course, I was confused.

“Oh…you trying to figure out how I got your number, ain’t you?” he asked, laughing.

“Yeah.”

“LaSheika gave it to me the other day.”

I could kill LaSheika. “She did?”

“You don’t sound all that happy to hear how hard I’m trying to see what’s up with you.”

I was too shocked to be happy. This ain’t seem like the kinda thing he would do. “Why you trying so hard?” I asked, lying across my bed.

“What you mean?”

“Why you going all out your way to find me?”

“Whatever, Tinka, you know you a cute girl.”

My stomach flipped over.

“Plus, I heard you real picky. I like that shit.”

“You do?” Now I get it. He must think I’m a virgin. Even though I was, I ain’t want him to think something was wrong with me for not doing it already.

“Yeah, I do…so what’s been up with you?”

“Nothing much. I just been chillin’.”

“Chillin’, huh? Why you always so quiet when I talk to you?”

“No reason,” I said, but I was really wondering how far I was gonna let this conversation go. I mean, Nine made my voice quiver. He was so secretive and sexy, and it was something about the tone of his voice, and the dark look in his eyes whenever I saw him. Plus, I wasn’t absolutely sure that was him and Clint at that liquor store that day. I took a deep breath and said, “I heard you from Barry Farms, is that true?”

He laughed. “Something like that, but why you gotta say it like that?”

“Like what?”

“Like it’s something bad about that.”

“Nah, I don’t mean it that way. I’m just saying, I heard it’s terrible out there.”

“And it’s not terrible where you live?”

“True. I guess some people could say that,” I said, laughing.

He laughed a little, too. “So…you don’t have a boyfriend?” Nine asked.

My stomach flipped again. “I got friends,” I lied a little.

“What kind of friends?”

“The kind I like.”

He laughed and then said, “I see you slick with your words. I heard about you.”

Glad he noticed. “What you hear about me?” I asked, sitting up on my elbows. I wanted to pinch myself. I still couldn’t believe we was actually talking right now. I couldn’t handle no face-to-face conversation anyway. My confidence was up like I ain’t-know-what over the phone.

“I heard things. Don’t worry about it,” he said, laughing.

“No, tell me,” I said, smiling.

“I’m just messing with you…When you gonna let me take you out somewhere?”

“Ummm…I don’t know.” Oh my God. I hoped it ain’t sound like I was smiling from ear to ear, because I was.

“What you doing later? Want to get something to eat somewhere.”

He had a car? “Ummm…I guess so.”

“Cool. You gonna be ready in like an hour?”

An hour? Oh my God. “Yeah, I will.”

“All right. Take my number down. I know y’all got caller ID,” he said, laughing.
