CHAPTER SEVENTEEN

“We are near,” Balra says in my head.

Jerking awake, I look around. Ian is in front of me, also dozing. We had been having a pleasant conversation, but between the food and a mug of Pearcy’s ale, we both fell asleep. To be truthful, I was the one who fell asleep first. I honestly don’t know the last time I slept, really. Do Gods need sleep? I mean, I love sleeping with my wives, but sleeping in a bed for the sake of sleeping? I will need to talk to Athena about that.

Reaching over, I jostle Ian, who jerks awake with a snort. “Balra says we are close,” I tell him.

He looks confused by his surroundings at first, but then fully awakens and nods.

“Can you make sure no one sees us please, Balra?” I ask her.

“You wish to remain hidden?” she says.

“Yes, so if you can pick an area that is out of the way, that would be good,” I tell her.

“Very well,” she says,

“Do you know how odd that is?” Ian says.

“What is?”

“Watchin you have a one-way conversation,” he says with a laugh.

“I guess it would be,” I tell him, agreeing with him with a chuckle.

“Oh, I can speak to both of you if you wish it,” she says.

Ian, with a shocked look on his face, says, “I heard her voice!”

“You can do that?” I ask Balra.

“Of course. Normally we only speak to our owners, but as a creature of magic, I can converse with anyone,” she says.

“Then, how come you never spoke to Lithania when we were going to the Elves?” I ask her.

“Because I didn’t want to,” she says in a huff.

“Fair enough,” I tell her with a laugh, patting her back affectionately.

Turning myself around, everything I look at is still covered in a smoky haze, but I start to see buildings through the smoke. For most of the ride I had only seen stick-like smoky items, which I assumed were trees in a forest. Abruptly, the smoke clears, and we are behind a building. It’s night out, there are no lights anywhere, and the moon is under the cover of clouds. And there is an awful smell of fish. Thinking of my clock, I see it’s 2:02 a.m. I slide off Balra quietly. Ian slides off next to me with barely a sound, even in his armor. The armor, since it’s black, blends into the night. I am sure I do as well, as my Suit is also black.

“Do you know where we are?” I ask Ian quietly.

He looks around, walks up to the building, and looks around the corner. He then does the same thing to the corner at the other end of the building. While he is doing that, I turn back to Balra.

“As always, Balra, thank you for the ride,” I tell her, walking up to her and giving her neck an enormous hug.

“You’re welcome, Master. You need to call me out more often. I enjoy these runs,” she says, pushing her thick neck against me and almost pushing me over.
