It’s dark and cramped. I can barely move. And I can’t see anything. There are others imprisoned in here with me, at least a dozen or more I’ve caught glimpses of in brief flashes of illumination as the doors to my cell swing open. But I don’t recognize any of them and they s peak in languages both foreign and bizarre. Then the doors shut and the darkness returns and I’m left with nothing but fear and more questions.

What have I done to deserve this?

The stench is almost unbearable.

Mildew and disinfectant mixed with the odor of ammonia permeates the cell. And something else. Something that reminds me of home yet smells sweet and cloying. It’s enough to make me break down but I can’t give in to my fear. Not if I want to get out of here. Wherever here is.

One minute, I’m in the company of friendly faces, others I’ve known for as long as I can remember and the next, I’m manhandled by some barbarian who barters for my freedom and then relegates me to this dark chamber of despair.
