When Abbie reached the house, pushed open the door, and stumbled in, her face a mask of snow and frozen tears, the twins were in the process of buttering bread. Their happy welcome was silenced at the sight of their mother’s face.

“Daddy’s hurt,” Abbie managed, in response to their torrent of questions. “You’ll have to go to Uncle Sam for help.” They were soon bundled into their warm clothing, bread forgotten, stumbling over snow-rutted roads for the neighbor.

Merry crept into her mother’s arms and Abbie held her close and rocked silently until she heard the creak of sleigh runners. Samuel Morris flung open the door and burst in, followed by Regina and the twins.

“Abbie?” Sam’s voice was anxious as his eyes sought those of the woman sitting in the gloom.

Abbie raised empty eyes to his disturbed and questioning gaze. “It’s Worth, Sam.”

“What in heaven’s name has happened!”

“It was the bush—the bush—”
