Jim, the man who was supposed to be able to secure him a new tire, was as old as the earth, his skin wrinkled like a wizened apple. His gaze was sharp, though, and his speech crackling with curse words. “That’s a ...” Curse word. “... model to find,” he said. “But I can cast about and have it for you on Monday.”

“Monday?” He had to be at work on Monday and that meant not one, but two, nights sharing a room with Lorelai. “You can’t find one by tomorrow?”

The half-dozen, either unemployed or barely employed, older men behind him, gazed back, unmoving. None of them doing any work on the cars disassembled inside the old garage.

The old man’s eyes seemed to snap. “Cain’t work ...” Curse word. “... on ...” Curse word. “... Sundays. Man ought to go to church.”

The fact Jim had used the f-word and a reference to church within the same sentence was appalling, but Jarek didn’t say so.

“I expect to see you there,” Jim added.

At church. With these people. Yet, what choice did he have? He sighed. “Fine. Is there some way to not leave my car beside the road that long?”

Jim wiped one greasy hand on his shirt.

“I’ll have my youngest boy fetch it.”

At this, a man, every bit of seventy, pushed to his feet, sliding keys from his pocket.

“Have Earl bring you back Monday morning.”

Jarek nodded, his stomach curled into a ball, spun on his heel, and walked to Earl’s truck.

Earl hadn’t said a word on the way over and didn’t say one on the way back. Jarek exited at the house, eager to check on Lorelai. He hadn’t liked the way Earl’s son had stared at her and had hoped, before they’d left, the mother would serve as some kind of safety.

The dogs accosted him at the door, barking and wagging. Wading through them took quite a bit of effort. Jarek followed distant female voices across the living space and through a narrow doorway into a tiny kitchen. He came to an abrupt halt.

There was no sign of the boy and the farmer didn’t follow. Lorelai, however, seemed happy, relaxed even. She looked up from a bowl of some sort of fruited dessert, a smile lighting her face. “Hello, dear. Mrs. McCann and I have discovered our love for plants.”

Jarek’s eyebrows rose.

“And she’s a wonderful cook. I had the best potato casserole, and this cobbler is positively divine.”

Mom and Pop food. The very thing she’d wanted hours ago that’d caused him to leave the highway.

“She can warm you some. Were you able to find a tire?”

Mrs. McCann rose and turned on her aged electric stove, the unit emitting an eerie hum.

Jarek cleared his throat. “They’ll have it on Monday.”

Lorelai, not rattled by that at all, scooped a bite of her dessert to her lips. “Wonderful. I’m told there’s an apple orchard nearby and we’re free to visit. Plus, we’re invited to church tomorrow. They’re having dinner-on-the-ground. How fortunate we came along as we did.
