CHAPTER 27

UCSB Date: 1008.002

Upper Observation Deck, GFS Matsumoto, Xoth System

Tony took in the view with an air of pride. The knowledge he’d gleaned from the Admiral, and his own information gathering, had allowed him to realize what Nevrin truly might be, someone of extreme, if hidden, importance at the very core of the Galactic Federation. More than that, he was a high born from whose genes he had descended. It gave him a hope for the future he’d never expected before. He didn’t even care about the reproduction contracts that had begun to flow in after he’d been promoted back to his former rank.

More than that, word had just come from OverCommand. The dark shadow that had hung over him ever since his return to service was no more. The Admiral had delivered the news to him that morning, but Tony requested to give the notice to Mark himself. He had spent hours crafting just the right message for him and sent it right before he came here. The sound of approaching feet was better than a read receipt that De Sade had read it.

“NERANT!!!” Mark hollered as he stormed into the observation bay. “What is this crap that I’ve been reassigned?”

“Not reassigned, Karasu,” he began, sure to use his callsign, which drew the attention of the other crew in the area. “You remain in the Rising Katanas. Your position as my watchdog, however, has been terminated.”

Mark raged up to him as Tony just turned to look back out at the bow of the ship and the massive gimballed MER-151-HH-A Buster-Razer Cannon Turrets. He could practically feel Mark fuming behind him. Tony felt safe, though, as he spotted several security guards in standard uniforms stiffen from the corner of his eye. He motioned towards them and then for Mark to stand beside him.

Mark caught the reflection of the guards in the silica-steel casements. Mark looked around, found himself surrounded, then approached with caution to stand beside Tony. The message was clear; Tony was now a protected asset. Though Tony realized those guards were just as likely to cut him down should he displease the Admiral, or worse, Nevrin. Still, for the moment, he was free; more than free, he had power over one who once lorded it over him.

Mark stared down at the dome below them. “Hard to believe what’s in there.”

“That’s the fusion core,” Tony replied. “The bubble is in the lower reactor.”

Mark looked at him in confusion. “How do you know that?”

“I asked, and those who knew answered. The next flight of Matsumoto’s should carry two bubbles, but Yamato decided that a single bubble would be enough for the prototype.”

Mark stood there, mouth agape. “Just how much do you know now?”

Tony turned to him slowly as a pair of cylindrical Otomo Class Gunships moved in to dock on the circular upper docking pad behind the reactor dome. Tony had come to learn as much as his newfound rank would allow him. His last time at this rank, he was only concerned with earning his emancipation and breeding rights.
