â 24 â
Peter sat in his dark hotel room and watched snowflakes dance outside his window. Heâd been on the road for five weeks, performed twenty-some shows in a bunch of cities, and lost ten pounds. At this rate, heâd be down fifty when the tour ended in May.
Feet propped on the windowsill, he folded his hands behind his head. Tonightâs show had been one of his best so far. Maybe it was the unexpected snow here inâ¦wherever he was. Pittsburgh. The crowdâs energy level had soared from the start, pulling him along.
Standing alone at the mic felt normal now, his band filling the stage behind him. It was fun throwing out jokes and making conversation with several thousand people and talking with them afterwards at the meet ân greet. Heâd even seen a few clips of himself on Entertainment Tonight, surrounded by fans. That had been a rush.
Glancing at his watch, he hit the speed dial number for Kiera. She hadnât answered earlier. Again, the call went straight to voice mail.
âHi, Beautiful. You must be having quite the evening. Or maybe your cell phone needs charging. Anyway, I miss you. I wish things werenât scheduled so tight. I need to get home to see you.
âThe show went great tonight. Theyâre getting a surprise snowfall here so I think thatâs why everyone was so jazzed. It was fun. I almost called you from the stage but Iâd left my phone in the hotel room. You wouldnât have thought it was funny, but I wouldâve loved it. Hey, speaking of funny, did you get the email I sent you? It came from Jeff. I thought the punch line was hilarious. Well, call me whenever you get in. Iâll be up late watching the DVD. I love you, Kiera.â
He tossed the phone onto the bed, then turned on a light, slid his Bible aside and opened his laptop. There were only a few nights he hadnât gone to sleep watching their DVD. As the pictures flashed across the screen, he tried to shake off the shadow hovering at the edge of his thoughts.
Kiera had seemed distant the past few conversations. He tried to include her in all of his news, but she seemed less interested now. While she was quick to say she loved him, he had the distinct sense that somethingâor maybe someoneâwas pulling her away.
Pausing the slideshow on a close-up of them, he studied their profiles. Something was wrong, but if he couldnât get her to tell him what it was, he couldnât fix it. He went to stand at the window, frowning at the peaceful winter scene, then turned to pace the room. Would she tell him if she found someone else? Could he blame her? He was out here playing rock star while she was home caring for Buck.
And just what are you going to do about it, Theisen? Itâs your choice to be out on tour.
He turned to look at their picture on the screen again. None
