CHAPTER 8

Eris woke from a dreamless sleep to find himself draped in mortal females. Most were still alive, and the moment he moved they stirred, opening their eyes and looking upon him as if he were the most handsome male on both worlds. Since he had enthralled them to believe that he was, their admiration failed to improve his dour mood.

His men had not yet recaptured the Scorpion lord, and that made him uneasy.

He pushed the women’s soft, clinging hands away as he got out of the bed, pulling on his robe and walking out into the front room of the hotel suite, where Paul was speaking to a pair of guards. As soon as he saw Eris he glanced past him and then told the guards to remove the dead women from the bed chamber.

“Have you found them?” Eris asked as he went over to the window and drew back the curtains to look at the panoramic view of the city. The band of dark blue on the horizon made him close them again.

“Not as of yet, Master.” Paul joined him. “The security system that we hacked has been shut off, so we cannot track them now. I can leave some men behind to guard the darksilvers, but after what happened at the factory, we do not have many left who are unchanged.”

He made a dismissive gesture. “Sharad is in the throes of blood lust, and Devyn Fletcher is likely dead now. If he has controlled his thirst, then he will have to search the entire city to find my army.”

“That is why the display at the factory may not have been the wisest choice, Master. The Paramount could take him to a darksilver, where he can cross over and warn the other traitors that you are coming with an immortal army.” Paul hesitated before he added, “All of the blade lords were undefeated in the arena. Our men have never fought anyone.”

“Even if the traitors believed Sharad, they are perhaps a hundred against five times as many immortals,” Eris reminded him. “Thanks to my efforts, they shall not know the battle has begun until it is almost over.”

“I think most of the men shall die trying to kill the blade lords.” The chief frowned. “You knew that when you promised them the other Houses.”

He imagined tearing off Paul’s head for a moment, but decided instead to reveal his true intentions. “They shall never replace my kind on Teren, for they would become like my long lost brothers. Like them they shall squabble over territories and mortals while they amass enough spells to begin another war of magic. That is why I cast a compulsion spell over every mortal that I changed.”

His chief took a step back. “What will you compel them to do, Master?”

“End all possibility of another war of immortals,” he said. “Once I have taken back my House and seized all of the others, I shall invoke the spell, which shall compel all of my immortal soldiers to walk out into the sunlight wherever they may be.
