Tiq stepped on a seemingly unremarkable place on the floor, and a whirlwind of dark magic flew up and enveloped her. She doubled over in pain, her eyes wide, but she didn’t cry out.

With no help from anyone, all the doors that had been open around the room slammed shut while tendrils of the tenebrae raced over the floors and walls, while some slipped up invisible channels into the ceiling.

“Well, shit.” I ran to the door we’d come in through and found it impossible to budge. I drew my sword and pressed it in, but there was a heavy resistance from the tenebrae. The magics sparked and pulsed against each other, and while I knew I could cut the door open given enough time, it seemed pretty damn likely that we did not have said time. I looked back at the others in a panic.

“dammit,” Revana growled. “Only one way out now.”

I resummoned my armor and rushed to Tiq, picking her up easily and throwing her over my shoulder.

She grunted but said nothing, her eyes still shut tightly.

Revana sprinted around the room until she found a staircase leading down and waved me to follow. The stairs wound downwards in a soft curve, and I was terrified we’d run into another magicked door I wouldn’t have time to open, but that never happened, and before I knew it, the stairs opened up into a massive, circular room. The entire thing had a mesh grate for a floor, sitting above a huge pool of water that was rushing away down an enormous pipe, probably leading to the waterfall we were heading towards. Despite being a sewer, the smell was not overwhelmingly bad.

Tiq gave me a tap and I set her down before we all began bolting for the other side. I looked back, expecting more guards hot on our tail, but there was nothing. When I looked forward again, I groaned. A free standing cloud of dark shadows had appeared in the center of the room, between us and our escape.

It fell into itself and with a huge crack and wave of power, and after the shadows cleared, there was a man standing there.

“VERMIN,” he yelled.

“Oh for fuck’s sake. Not this asshole!”

It was indeed that asshole, Gor’drelar, Sixtee—

“I AM GOR’DRELAR, SIXTEENTH SON OF HIS MOST GRAND MAJESTY, THE EMPEROR OF THE GORVANI EMPIRE AND YOUR DOOM!” He threw his hands to the side, and like last time, he was only garbed from the waist down, his pristine white robes billowing away from his body.

I glanced at Revana. “Okay. This time?”

She nodded, a bit of fear creeping into her eyes. “I think we have to, but yeah, we might be able to take him.” While Sixteen was still monologuing about us being vermin or something, Revana channeled into my armor, solidifying it more than she had before, covering it with spikes and making it much heavier.

I pulled the shae into my body, allowing me to easily carry the weight. I pushed it out through my sword which gleamed brightly, the shae extending a foot beyond the tip of the blade.
