The next few days were busy. Oscar introduced Redlock to a few friends around his neighborhood, one of whom had a reasonably secure room for rent.
The local gang had started out as a neighborhood watch group who took things a step further than most. In one bloody weekend, they had wiped out several other gangs that had been making life difficult for the local populace. Since then, they took over the turf with the express intent of keeping the people living there safe from harassment. That made them almost like a small public security force, though they had turned to moving and selling illicit drugs and BTL chips to fund their addiction to cybernetic augmentations. They called themselves The Watch.
Redlock made his rent money by hiring out as backup for a couple of their big deals. Heâd been careful to wear a ballistic mask and full biker armor to the meet, both because it looked intimidating, and because it would prevent anyone from recognizing his face. It was highly unlikely anyone would recognize his expensive custom cybernetic arms and legs, but he hadnât wanted to take that chance, either.
The whole exchange simmered with tension as both partiesâ security watched each otherâs people for the first signs of betrayal. It took less than five minutes, but it felt like hours before the drones had finished transferring the crates from a semi-trailer to a small fleet of Nomad pickup trucks. It had been good money to stand around and do nothing, but the next time they asked Redlock to tag along, he declined. Risking his life in Urban Brawl or even a fight in the streets with a gang was null persp. Participating in an exchange without knowing if it would break out into combat until it was over was too much for his nerves. It was a miracle he hadnât shot anyone the last time.
Oscar turned out to be a handy person to have as a friend. It was hard to figure out what the man did for a living, but it seemed to be working. He was well-connected in his corner of Puyallup. The Watch deferred to him as if he had a leadership position in the gang, but he didnât wear their colors. He seemed to know most of the local people here on an individual basis, and they treated him with respect. He was like a combination of street mayor, gang leader, and fixer. It was a good working relationship, but sometimes seemed more familiar. It wasnât unusual for Oscar to call him up to help him take care of a problem or just to hang out.
