33. The Ice Light

About the Ice Light

For Justine’s session, I decided to do something completely different from my usual lighting. I put up light-blocking curtains over my windows and used a single Ice Light on a stand as my only light source (see setup shots below). I left a tiny bit of the blackout curtains open to let a little light fall on the navy curtains in the background, since the Ice Light’s illumination wouldn’t extend that far. I consider that falloff to be a plus; I loved that the light is just where I want it and not spilling where I don’t want to see it. The Ice Light is an amazingly portable sculpting light—easy to use, soft, and with just enough light to do the job.

Using the Ice Light

Especially for Justine’s booty shot, I had to be conscious of where I put the light so that her behind was lit just the way I wanted. The same posing rules applied, but with this light, I was able to define, hide, and show exactly what was intended. With some of the longer body shots, I had to be careful about the light falling off too quickly. In the image of her with the flag, the little bit of light from the open curtains gave just enough illumination to show her feet and legs, while the Ice Light was used to light her face and upper body.
