THE REST OF THE PRAYER

Remind participants that Jesus knows the Psalms well. He speaks the first line of Psalm 22—“My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?”—but he knows that this prayer ends very differently from what you might expect based on its early verses. When Jesus speaks these final words from the cross, he has in mind the entire prayer, not just the beginning.

Invite a volunteer to read Psalm 22:1-18.

Ask:

•How are the words of these verses appropriate for what Jesus is feeling on the cross?

•How do you think early Christians, when reading this psalm, saw Jesus in them?

Now, invite another volunteer to read the rest of Psalm 22 (vv. 19-31).

Ask:

•How does the entire feeling of this psalm change when you continue to the end?

•Did you notice this pattern in some of the other psalms of despair that we read earlier?

•How does reading the entire psalm change how you see Jesus’s prayer from the cross? What is he really saying?

•How do you interpret the psalmist’s statement in verses 30-31, that future generations will say that the Lord “has done it”?
