Chapter 20

“Why do you think that was so hard?” asked Througar.

“It was a test,” said Yorrick. “To see if we could handle the dungeon.”

“And if we couldn’t handle it?”

Yorrick shrugged. “Then we wouldn’t have gotten through. If we didn’t have enough damage potential to take out the gate guards quickly enough, then we certainly wouldn’t be able to handle whatever bosses there are farther inside.”

“But we barely made it through,” said Milneth in between sips of her conjured water.

“So the fights might be difficult for us,” said Yorrick. “Presumably they shouldn’t be impossible though.”

Kelath checked the time. With the late start from waiting on Througar to join them and the struggle they’d had in fighting just to get inside, they were coming up on almost two hours since they’d started. He’d hoped they would be farther along by now, but he couldn’t hold that against the group. So far they’d worked together pretty well, and he hoped the trend would continue.

“This might be the hardest dungeon anyone has found in the game so far,” said Kelath to temper expectations. “We’ll do our best and go as far as we can tonight, but this is mostly a learning experience. The more we can figure out about how this dungeon works, the easier it will be the next time.”

“You don’t think we’ll beat it tonight?” asked one of the rogues.

“I’ll be happy if we make it to the first boss,” said Kelath. “I’m guessing he’s at the top of the tower here, guarding whatever mechanism raises the portcullis. If we manage to beat him, that will be a nice bonus.”

The rogue hadn’t needed to rest and wandered around as if anxious to proceed. He approached the doorway through which the merrow reinforcements had emerged. “Want me to scout it out?”

“Yeah, let us know what you find,” Kelath said as he stood up and surveyed the items left in his pouch. “I’m going to need some time to conjure more bombs and elixirs for the next fight anyway.”

The player who had been speaking gave a quick salute before going into stealth mode and entering the tower. The second rogue followed close behind. Kelath pulled out the conjured water he’d made before and started casting spells to turn them into bombs and elixirs. The rest of the group milled about, gathering some coins and other sellable items from the corpses of the merrow they’d killed so far. They found no magic items, but Kelath expected anything good would come from the bosses they fought later. With his supplies replenished, Kelath sat down with another bottle of water to refill his mana. By the time he was finished, the rogues had returned.

“There are some stairs spiraling up along the outer wall of the tower,” said one of the rogues. “It looks like there are at least two floors above us, with a group of merrow guarding the landings.”

“How many in the group?” asked Througar.

“Five,” said the rogue, “although there’s only one hoplite in each group. The other was replaced by a new type that has a pet crab following it around.
