The newly discovered letter, however, finally sheds some light on the matter. Addressed to Bonaparte (in Engelman’s photographs, several pictures of her can be seen adorning the walls of Freud’s study) and written from his London exile, it recounts aspects of Freud’s hasty departure from Vienna. In the course of this, Freud writes:
