Agent Carson hated his assignment. He had initially thought it was the path to future promotion, now he saw it as a noose around his neck weighing him down and threatening to take him down permanently. If he couldn't find a way to stop the bastards raiding the armories soon he would be the scapegoat the powers that be would offer to the public. And then some other poor over-eager sap with delusions of grandeur and a future career would be tasked with the job.

He'd thought he'd seen a pattern in the way they were hitting various places so he'd posted a few traps and pre-positioned a few of his units. But the enemy had gotten tipped by the damn media and had hit elsewhere, making him look impotent.

Something had to be done. They were obviously ramping up to something, building up quite an inventory of weapons and gear. The same gang had hit a few banks, jewelry stores, and even an armored car, but most of them were low-key stuff compared to what they could get with the gear. He hadn't seen any of the gear on the black market, which was an ominous sign.

He scowled as he checked the latest sector. There were no signs of activity, but he was playing a hunch. There was a Marine reserve armory there. It had recently received a shipment of tactical gear too. Which was why he and some of his people were spending their evening on a stakeout in the middle of nowhere.

His people knew that whoever was doing this had an in with the supply department in the Planetary Security Department. They had to; there was no way they were that lucky. Unfortunately, the suspect pool was a wide one and growing bigger daily as they tried to figure out who was involved. In looking for them, he'd stumbled on the note about this shipment, which was why he'd played his hunch. Normally the gang was smart enough to avoid the Feds, but this target was a juicy one and lightly defended to boot. If it was just the gear they were after, they'd go for it.

At least, that was how he'd convinced himself to go on what was seemingly a fool's errand. He rubbed his brow as a four-winged pterodactyl took a dump on his windshield. “Lovely,” he muttered, climbing out of the air car.

“Go get some towels, Chuck,” he said as he dumped some of his canteen onto the mess. It just spread it around and made it worse. “They don't pay us enough for this …shit,” he muttered, wrinkling his nose at the smell.

His partner shook his head and then stalked off up the dirt road to the nearby general store.
