CHAPTER 16

STRATEGY

We couldn’t get very close to the actual site.

We couldn’t exactly drive up to the base of the mountain and then just climb up to the bluffs to join the others like we were out there backpacking or rock-climbing.

In the end, we decided to walk in.

Well, I didn’t decide that.

I didn’t decide much of anything.

I kept quiet and kept my thoughts to myself as the others discussed their options and made their decisions and implemented their plans.

They all talked like soldiers in a war, so I listened closely but didn’t volunteer much, since I didn’t know shit about war or battles or strategies or tactics. I’d never been in the military. I’d done stunts for a few military-type action movies, but that hardly counted. Clearly most of these people spent a good chunk of their lives fighting in one war or another.

Even Valek had been a soldier for much of his life.

More than that, he’d been raised with the mindset that he was fighting a war, even when he wasn’t technically in any military.

I wasn’t entirely sure how I felt about that yet.

Jon, Yumi, Anale, and Declan soon emerged as the most verbal of the group. Valek had opinions, as did Varlan, that older seer with the scar on his face, and Sita and others threw in words here and there, but mostly, those four talked out their various ideas and strategies around the map. They discussed war plans Wreg had in place for different scenarios. They checked in frequently with other seers on the comms to get their views on this or that approach.

Listening to them talk is how I realized we had a lot more numbers with us than I’d first understood. Most were already on the other side of enemy lines, standing between the invaders and the human city, Ginjuli.

We were on a different team, in a different set of trucks.

I didn’t get all the strategy there, but it seemed clear our team hoped they might throw the enemy off balance, and cause them to hesitate on sending bombs or other larger weapons, if they used me and Valek this way. Meaning, instead of hiding us in the back somewhere, they were using us as part of the extraction team.

Jon seemed to think they wouldn’t want me or Valek dead––especially me.

The entire leadership team under Jon agreed that extracting me, alive, was likely the invaders’ main goal. They also agreed with Valek that they likely wanted me so I could open those dimensional portals that led to Old Earth, and free their dark masters.

They wanted the Dreng to return. They wanted the Dark Ones to be freed, and reunited with them, their true and most faithful servants.

I knew they might not be right. I honestly didn’t have an opinion on that.

I knew they were taking a lot on faith themselves.

I also knew Jon, especially, stayed in contact with yet another team of seers back at the settlement, who were probably weighing in more than I realized. I watched Valek respond to that team a few times, as well, and felt it through his light.
