I opened just one eye.

If I was about to be confronted with the world’s dirtiest hangover, I wanted to ease into it. But as I blinked the second eye open, I didn’t feel as wretched as anticipated. God bless bailing early and polishing off a tray of mac and cheese in bed, I praised myself.

I got out of the expensive sheets, slipping my feet into the hotel slippers and shimmying into my robe. Saturday morning meant brunch with the Marshalls, so I was glad to not have to face them with nausea and a pounding head.

After I was showered and clad in a summery maxi-dress from the Robbie case, something I would normally wear to a wedding, not brunch, I went through the adjoining door. Robbie was ready to go, sitting at the table with one foot tapping repeatedly on the floor.

“Good, you’re up,” he said when he noticed me, taking in the dress for a moment. Visible lines could be seen under his eyes, though he seemed alert as ever. “The others are already down there. We should get going.”

I followed him to the door, which he held open for me, uncharacteristically. We didn’t speak while we made our way to the restaurant, which gave me time to play the regrettable kiss in my head on repeat.

“About time,” Stephanie said when we arrived, looking annoyingly fresh but infinitely less perky than she did the night before. “I’m starving.”

Ryan and John were in a deep discussion about the stock market as we took our seats at the table, and Eleanor and Stephanie went back to judging the floral arrangements.

I hadn’t seen much of the groom at the party, mainly because he was busy taking shots and making out with Stephanie. But I had a chance to appraise him now, though I expected he had seen better days. In fact, he looked like he would rather punch himself in the face than sit through brunch with his soon-to-be in-laws.

Ben looked across to us with bloodshot eyes, giving me a tight smile. When the waitress came over to take our order, he quietly requested dry toast and black coffee. The allegedly starving Stephanie ordered herself an egg white omelet with no cheese.

“You look under the weather,” Ryan said to Robbie, leaning back in his chair to scope us out. “Never could hold your liquor.”

Robbie exhaled just loud enough for me to hear before replying. “I’m fine, just didn’t get much sleep.”

“Yeah, right.” Ryan grinned at their dad.

The food came out promptly, carried by two waitresses who set each plate down on the crisp white tablecloth. My pancakes came drizzled with maple syrup, ice-cream and berries on the side, extras that I was usually too tight to spring for. I saw Robbie smile out the corner of my eye.

“Numbers must have been good last month,” John’s voice rose over the tinkering of utensils. He looked down the table to Robbie, who was caught off guard.

“Numbers?”

“For the paper. I hear readership is increasing amongst the younger demographic, like we’d hoped.
