CHAPTER 14

In the produce section, Janet attended to Quentin as best she could. He was scrunched up in a ball on the floor, weeping like a baby.

"All my medical supplies were cleaned out when this thing hit. Alcohol, toilet paper, everything," said Janet. Thinking quickly, she broke open a bag of salt and mixed it with some bottled water. She shook the bottle vigorously. “This should kill the bacteria. All I’ve got—” she said as she poured it over Quentin’s bite wound.

He writhed on his stomach, screaming out in pain. Quentin’s hard eyes were soft now, pleading for help and understanding. “Oh God help me! I’m going to become one of them.”

“You already were one of them, nut job!” Rachel said with a hiss.

“Shut up, whore job!” Quentin spat back.

A loud moan silenced everyone. "You hear that?" asked Maxwell. Nobody moved. Even Quentin momentarily stopped groaning—listening for what the others had just heard.

“We have no more guns! No way to defend ourselves!” piped up Eugene.

“Guns aren’t going to stop these things,” said Peter.

“Fire! We can burn them!” added Quentin.

“Yeah, real smart. Burn the whole place down around us too, stupid redneck,” sneered Rachel.

“Fuck off, whore neck!” Shot back Quentin still grimacing in pain.

Maxwell hopped around trying to place the source of the sound, when another loud moan echoed terrifyingly through the aisles. They all turned and looked down at the opposite end of the produce section where a zombie ambled into view.

“It’s Flo....” Peter said, recognizing her big hair and heavy makeup despite her grotesque facial distortion. She had smeared lipstick over her extra-large, unhinged mouth and lips. She was wearing her waitress uniform, her stomach bulging out beneath the fabric as if she had swallowed a watermelon. She moved jerkily towards them with evil intent in her dead-set eyes.

“Any suggestions?” Maxwell piped up.

Peter looked around and saw an assortment of fruits and vegetables. He took a grapefruit in his hand, did a wind-up, and threw it like a major league pitcher, hitting Flo square on the nose. Flo’s head snapped back from the force of the blow, but she quickly regained her composure and continued to lurch forward.

“Nice throw, son! Those two seasons of little league really paid off,” said Eugene.

Everyone took up fresh produce, hurling it with reckless abandon at zombie Flo. They pelted her in the face, body, and arms. She began to resemble a giant fruit salad with teeth.

“This is for your horrible service last week,” Maxwell shouted, as he heaved a cantaloupe like a shot-putter. It nailed Flo in the forehead and almost knocked her off of her feet.

Peter turned to Janet. “If you only carried sulfuric acid,” Peter said with defeat.

“Sorry! Fresh out!” said Janet as she heaved a bag of salt. It exploded in Flo’s face and she screamed in agony. Instantaneously, Flo’s body disintegrated before their eyes, turning her remains into mush. It was like salt poured onto a slug, but infinitely more devastating.

Janet looked at Peter in awe. His eyes lit up as though he had had an epiphany.
