Monday morning hung in the air like a thick fog as Dana entered the hospital and made her way to the nurses’ station. Everyone she passed nodded politely, but there was little conversation. Caffeine had not yet pumped its way through the veins of the hospital and its staff. It’d be an hour or so before the humans replaced the zombies. A good time to get reacquainted with her office.

Dana spotted the large file on the desk beside her computer as soon as she walked in. Several file folders, in fact, held together with a giant rubber band. And so it begins, she thought, sinking into her chair. She set her travel mug on the desk, and lifted the heavy stack of files, knowing exactly what they were without even a glance – her extra workload.

She glanced at her watch. With any luck, Amy would have some information for her at the one o’clock team meeting. They needed to get the new part-time nurse on board soon. HR was checking references on the three candidates Dana wanted to interview to help fill the gap while she took over some of Brad’s duties for the summer. Since they wouldn’t be paying Brad’s salary while they searched for a new administrator, the hospital could afford some part-time help.

The community classes always started the second week of June to give the teachers a week off. That meant the summer schedule started next week – and Brad’s last day was Friday.

Like a ghost she’d conjured out of thin air, the man’s reflection appeared on Dana’s darkened computer screen.

“Dana, great. I see you’re already diving in.”

She swiveled but remained seated. “Hey, Brad.”

He rubbed his hands together, nodding toward the folders in Dana’s lap. “So, we’re all set?”

Dana blinked. “Oh, you mean on the classes?”

“Yeah. You have everything you need?”

She stood then, puzzled by his question. Did it mean the folders were all she got? No overview, no update, no additional information? “Well, yes, I suppose so, as long as everything in here is current. I’ve just started looking. Are all the classes fill–?”

“Yep. It’s all in there. Just holler if you need anything else. But holler quick.” The wide grin on his face reminded her of the Cheshire cat – as though he were getting away with something. Really, if he disliked Whitfield so much, why had he taken the position in the first place? Andrew was right. They needed to find someone who would connect with the community and embrace it.

Dana pasted on a smile. “I hear you’re looking at Portland.”

“Right. We’re heading to Kansas City first. That’ll be home base while I interview. Don’t expect to be there long, but it’ll give the kids a chance to visit my folks.”

“Yes, that’ll be nice,” Dana said, suppressing the urge to shoo him out the door.

“Well, guess I’ll see you later.”

“Sounds good.”

Dana was surprised to find Brad seated at the conference table for the management meeting. Probably had nothing else to do since he’d already dispersed his responsibilities.
