Chapter thirteen

Thirteeen

Carrie

I sit down at my desk, needing a break, but also to gather a few items I could work on from my apartment. Rowan and I stopped at some high-rise downtown, and Rowan returned with a bag before we stopped here at the office. I can still hear him rifling through my uncle’s office while I stuff my bag full of materials pertaining to the bank deal.

Rodney would tell me not to worry about it, and not just because he hates Rowan Marshal’s guts right now, but also because he says I work too hard anyway, let alone while I’m sick or wounded. My headache has subsided for now, but I know it’s only temporary. I’m just counting down the time until I’ll need to go home, take a painkiller and fall asleep in my cloud of a bed.

I flip through the papers, finding our pre-sale contract. It’s just a simple statement saying we would take the property in question off of the market so the buyer could get a fair, unbiased deal. Rowan didn’t want our choice to sell to be influenced by outside bids that could outdo his own, but in reality, he has been the only one to ever show interest in that impoverished bank.

Rodney wants me to cut this deal at the neck, but I made sure the contract is solid, only furthering the self-assurance that I am good at my job. My high school in Cottonwood Falls seems to agree, but I’m not sure what they think I’m going to do at this reunion. I’m a lawyer for real-estate, not a crowned princess.

Rowan lingers outside the office, picking up the mess left in the scuffle of the fight. Everyone will come back from the weekend tomorrow and work as if nothing happened. I have yet to decide if I want to return to the office with everyone else, knowing that Rodney won’t be released in time to be here.

That is, unless he signs that waiver he’s been pushing to sign so he can ignore doctor’s orders and leave the medical institute earlier than they would prefer. Aunt Sara wouldn’t allow it, but she’s a reserved woman by nature. She’s the only one personally capable of handling my uncle.

Rodney can be the nicest man on the planet in one second, but in the next he can make someone’s life a living hell. I think that’s been made clear in Rowan’s headspace, more so after my uncle called my brother to dish on old, worn-out gossip among Cottonwood Falls.

“Hey, are you okay?”

I glance up from my desk, wondering how long I’ve been just sitting here to make up for my racing, overworking mind. “Yeah, sorry about that. I just—my head was in other places.”

“I can see that,” he says. “Do you feel okay? Should we leave soon?”

I only shake my head, grabbing the bank files and moving to stuff the remainder of what I’ve printed out already into my satchel. Some of it slips out, drifting to the floor below, and I groan at the mess I’ve made.
