IT ANNOYED SEBASTIAN to find Natalie hanging up the phone when he walked into the kitchen.

“Who were you talking to?” he asked, calmly approaching.

“Mindy,” she said. “The girl who volunteers at the shop. I had to tell her to find another job.”

“I have to ask you not to use the phone at all,” he said. He sounded harsh, but couldn’t help it.

She nodded. At least she understood the rationale behind his request.

“And I have to ask you to stop keeping things from me,” she said.

“Like what?”

“Like Matt’s disappearing. And whatever else you’re hiding.”

She came to stand in front of him. Her heart was beating faster, whether from the confrontation or his proximity, he couldn’t be sure.

“Where is everyone?” he asked. The prospect of being alone with her appealed to him. Even if he wouldn’t be having sex with her anytime soon, he wanted to be near her, talk to her. How weird was that? His heart made an unaccustomed leap when she smiled at him.

“Haven took Callie upstairs to start an online shopping spree.” Natalie laughed. “She’s insisting on buying us new wardrobes. I’ll have my turn later. What a sweet person.”

Natalie nudged him with her elbow and walked first through the door. “The possibility I might give in to your charms?”

“Or I yours. This isn’t one-sided.”

She stopped on the second step and looked back at him. “No. It isn’t.”

He grinned at her back as she led the way toward the side of the house and the garden.

Though early in the season, hellebore bloomed in white and pink. Pretty enough, though Sebastian preferred the black willows and dogwoods and hearty shrubs, tamed by vigilant pruning. They walked silently, until they came across a stone bench, nestled into a U of boxwoods.

“Can we sit for a few minutes?” he asked, already pulling her down beside him.

Neither spoke for some time, each seeming content to breathe in the moist, fragrant air. It felt strange, and somehow perfect, to be sitting here studying Natalie’s profile as she tipped her face up to the sun and closed her eyes, her long lashes casting a shadow over lightly freckled skin. It was hard to resist their lure. So he didn’t, leaning over to touch his lips to a tiny constellation.

Surprised, Natalie’s eyes popped open and her face turned, positioning her lips directly on his. Her initial jolt told him her reflex might have been to move away, but she held still, eyes closing again. What could he do, except glide his hands into that lush red hair, and settle in for a much-anticipated meeting of hearts—lips? He meant lips.

Heart only came to mind because whenever he touched her, his did something peculiar. It
