Chapter Fifteen
Dog food
Hank whined as I growled and threw my hands up in defeat.
“Mira, it’s been three days, you need a break,” Kiran pleaded. The lack of sleep caused the days to bleed together, making them feel like one gigantic failure. Last night, I managed to get four solid hours of rest, but that was only because I had passed out from exhaustion.
“It shouldn’t be this hard!” I yelled, letting out a slew of curse words before marching to the couch and throwing myself on its cushions.
Erik followed me over and frowned. “You’re weak, and you haven’t really performed magic in four years. What did you expect? Your body doesn’t have the strength, and your mind has turned into a lazy chicken.”
My brow wrinkled at the odd specificity of his words. Plus, I had no idea chickens could be lazy. The image of a white hen in a bathrobe at a spa nearly made me laugh, but I was too mad at myself to give in.
“I think you’ve locked away your gifts so tightly that you need to figure out how to open the gate again. Maybe we should try something a little less daunting until you get it?” Ash suggested.
I rolled my eyes and sat up. “I made Hank food, it’s not like I didn’t use it at all.”
“Yes, but that was a trickle. Now you’re asking for the whole damn river and your body just isn’t used to it.”
My sigh of defeat pushed me down into a slump. I rested my elbows on my knees. They were probably right, but my stubborn streak didn’t want to admit it.
Magic was never something I had to work at. It had always come to me as easily as breathing.
Kiran knelt in front of me with a sad smile. “You’ll get it, little dove. I know you will.”
His sympathy caused a tear to leak out down my cheek. He was always so sweet, trying to lift my spirits with his ridiculously sexy grins and soft words of encouragement. I was afraid if I spoke, it would open the floodgates of self-pity, so I nodded and put a hand on his shoulder.
“Dog food,” Erik suddenly said.
“What?”
“Dog food!” he repeated more insistently, “make dog food until you can move on to something else. Then make that until you can move on to an even bigger thing.”
“Your answer is to make tons of dog food?” I asked dryly.
Kiran and Ash nodded.
“Makes sense, besides it’s not like it could hurt. Anything left over can be fed to the wild animals and birds,” Ash added.
I couldn’t believe they were actually serious. I was tempted to start making it right in the living room to be a smart ass, but they would most likely cheer me on instead of being offended. But I also thought a little playfulness was in order given the situation, so I closed my hand and concentrated on my palm while continuing to chant in the hopes that they couldn’t tell what was happening.
