Alicia was disappointed to hear that Ian had left, but she understoodâhelping his mother was obviously his first priority. She was also relievedâshe needed a break from him to clear her head. Maybe by the time she saw him again, sheâd be more certain about where she stood, and sheâd know how to keep him from getting under her skin.
But she had the feeling heâd still manage it anyway.
She had never expected Rhett and Colton to stick around as long as they did, especially after Ian left. But they stayed until the dining room walls were washed and the furniture was clean, and they promised to come back on their next days off and see what else needed to be done. They were really nice guysâand they didnât spend their time judging her and giving her long-winded, misguided lectures about how the world worked and other ridiculous things like some people did.
By the time Tammy and Alicia were ready to go, they were both so stiff and sore, Alicia was surprised they were able to walk toward the car. Garrett had gotten a good portion of the rewiring done, and he promised heâd be back first thing in the morning. As soon as he was done tromping back and forth in the kitchen, theyâd be able to scrub down all the dishes and food preparation counters, and that would be the last task before they could officially reopen. Alicia thought it might be a day and a half, maybe two, until theyâd be ready.
That was so soon.
âIâve called my supplier and arranged for a new shipment,â Tammy said as they drove back home. âA lot of the things I had on hand are now a little smoky-flavored, and that just doesnât work in a bakery.â
âOh, come on. What about bacon donuts? Those are smoky.â
âYes, but I donât make bacon donuts.â
âYou could try. They might be a hit.â
âI really donât want to try.â
âI was just coming up with different ways to use your supplies so you donât have to throw them out. Thereâs a ton of food thereââ
âAlicia. Stop.â
At the tone of her sisterâs voice, Alicia clamped her lips together. She didnât dare say anything elseânot when Tammy was finally putting her foot down about something. Good for Tammy ⦠even if it did feel weird for Alicia to hold back her opinions.
Tammy gestured emphatically. âYou look at those supplies and you see wasted money. I see disappointed customers, people who expect a certain level of quality from me. If I break trust with them, they might not come back, and thatâs even more harmful to the business than losing a hundred dollarsâ worth of flour and sugar.â
Alicia felt stupid that she hadnât realized that for herself. âYouâre right,â she said. âYouâre totally right. Iâm sorryâI should let you take care of it without butting in.â
âNo, itâs okayâthereâs just a lot about a food service business thatâs going to be different from other sorts of businesses. Youâll get the hang of it.
