Alicia was disappointed to hear that Ian had left, but she understood—helping his mother was obviously his first priority. She was also relieved—she needed a break from him to clear her head. Maybe by the time she saw him again, she’d be more certain about where she stood, and she’d know how to keep him from getting under her skin.

But she had the feeling he’d still manage it anyway.

She had never expected Rhett and Colton to stick around as long as they did, especially after Ian left. But they stayed until the dining room walls were washed and the furniture was clean, and they promised to come back on their next days off and see what else needed to be done. They were really nice guys—and they didn’t spend their time judging her and giving her long-winded, misguided lectures about how the world worked and other ridiculous things like some people did.

By the time Tammy and Alicia were ready to go, they were both so stiff and sore, Alicia was surprised they were able to walk toward the car. Garrett had gotten a good portion of the rewiring done, and he promised he’d be back first thing in the morning. As soon as he was done tromping back and forth in the kitchen, they’d be able to scrub down all the dishes and food preparation counters, and that would be the last task before they could officially reopen. Alicia thought it might be a day and a half, maybe two, until they’d be ready.

That was so soon.

“I’ve called my supplier and arranged for a new shipment,” Tammy said as they drove back home. “A lot of the things I had on hand are now a little smoky-flavored, and that just doesn’t work in a bakery.”

“Oh, come on. What about bacon donuts? Those are smoky.”

“Yes, but I don’t make bacon donuts.”

“You could try. They might be a hit.”

“I really don’t want to try.”

“I was just coming up with different ways to use your supplies so you don’t have to throw them out. There’s a ton of food there—”

“Alicia. Stop.”

At the tone of her sister’s voice, Alicia clamped her lips together. She didn’t dare say anything else—not when Tammy was finally putting her foot down about something. Good for Tammy … even if it did feel weird for Alicia to hold back her opinions.

Tammy gestured emphatically. “You look at those supplies and you see wasted money. I see disappointed customers, people who expect a certain level of quality from me. If I break trust with them, they might not come back, and that’s even more harmful to the business than losing a hundred dollars’ worth of flour and sugar.”

Alicia felt stupid that she hadn’t realized that for herself. “You’re right,” she said. “You’re totally right. I’m sorry—I should let you take care of it without butting in.”

“No, it’s okay—there’s just a lot about a food service business that’s going to be different from other sorts of businesses. You’ll get the hang of it.
