CHAPTER 36

MARGOT REMEMBERED THE baseball bat she kept under her bed about two seconds after her ex-husband barged into her house.

“Margot, we have to talk.”

She stepped instinctively between him and Sandy. Whatever was about to happen, he couldn’t bring Sandy into it.

He held up his hand. “Listen, I know Candy was here. And it’s not what you think.”

More excuses? Margot was overcome with an overwhelming desire to throw up on Jack’s polished work shoes.

He glanced behind her and addressed Sandy. “I’m sorry, could we have a minute?”

Sandy squared her shoulders and straightened out her flowered skirt. “Not until I know what’s going on.” Even though Sandy sounded bold, Margot thought she detected the slightest hint of a quiver in her usually calming voice.

Jack let out a chuckle. “Listen, ladies, I’m sorry if I scared you. But Candy said you’d been drinking and ...” He lowered his hands. “Listen, I just want to explain. Candy and I got into a fight and ...” He took a step forward. Margot kept her balance, ready to attack if he came too close.

“It’s not what you think.” Funny. Those were the exact same words he’d used when Margot confronted him about the steamy texts she’d found on his phone when they were still married. He was lying to her then, and he was sure as anything lying to her now.

“I don’t want your excuses,” she told him. Taking her cue from Sandy’s display of courage, she straightened her body and met his gaze head on. “And I think you need to leave. Now.”

He didn’t move. “Not until you’ve heard what I have to say.”

She balled her hands into fists. “I told you to leave. This isn’t your house. Not anymore.” The last word came out like a pitiful croak.

“There’s a reason I had those pictures,” he began. “I was trying to find her.”

Margot narrowed her eyes. “You’re disgusting. I can’t believe I wasted my life with someone who ... with someone that ....”

Jack took one step closer. If he wanted to, he could reach out his arm and touch her cheek. “I was looking for Becky.” His voice was pained. Pleading.

Margot’s head was swimming. “And you found her?”

“Yes. I mean no. I mean, you don’t understand. I hired a private detective.”

A wave of dizziness swept over her. She reached out and held onto Sandy’s shoulder to steady herself. “You did what?”

“Hired a private investigator. The police were putting all their resources into finding Becky. The trail was stone cold. So I hired someone. Top guy in the state. He did an image trace. He knows websites where girls are ... he knows what he’s looking for I guess is all I should say. And he came up with some of them. Sent them to me to confirm that they were really her.”

Margot felt her body sinking into the couch as her legs decided they no longer wanted to support her weight. She shook her head. “How could you keep them? How could you hold onto them?”

“Because they’re proof that our daughter is alive.
