“Frozen? That’s not on my backing track.”

At the statement, Harper gave Eliza a look of total confusion. Of course a four-year-old didn’t understand the concept of an instrumental-only track, but she really didn’t understand a person unfamiliar with Frozen.

Eliza wouldn’t give up. The child was too bright, too much fun, and finally coming out of her shell.

“But this”—Eliza held up her phone—“is like karaoke for Broadway tunes. If Rogers and Hammerstein wrote it, I’ve got it. Oklahoma, Sound of Music, South Pacific. Anything work for you?”

“Frozen.”

Eliza laughed at her sweetly stubborn face. “I know you like musicals because I heard you singing State Fair. How about we learn a dance from that one, Harper?”

She shook her head and threw her arms up. “Let it go!” she yelled. But that was no speaking voice when she sang. The kid had pipes.

Curled on the sofa in her living room sipping tea, Teddy smiled at the exchange. “But Miss Eliza wants to teach the dance steps.” She leaned forward to whisper, “She was a professional dancer in New York!”

Harper was only moderately impressed.

“Please do Frozen,” she said, with praying hands that were so adorable it actually hurt.

Truth was, Eliza had done nothing but thoroughly enjoy Harper ever since Teddy called and invited her to spend the evening babysitting while Katie was at her book club.

“Can we at least watch the movie first?” Eliza asked on a laugh, but Harper shook her head and lifted her arms again, opening her mouth.

“Let it go, I know,” Eliza stopped her before she belted it out again, leaning forward to take her hands. “But I don’t know that song.”

“Don’t you have a little girl?” she asked.

“I do. Her name is Olivia, but she’s not little. She was pre-Frozen.”

“Oh.” Her tiny, narrow shoulders dropped in disappointment.

“So, can we do, Our state fair is a great state fair…” she whispered the line and mimicked a marching dance to the tune, enough to make Harper’s face brighten as she sang the next line, much louder.

“She’s not even off-key,” Eliza said to Teddy. “I’m sorry, but the talent agent in me kind of itches to get this girl out there.”

“I doubt Katie would agree to that, but a private show in my living room would be nice.”

Eliza pushed the coffee table with its breakable crystals out of the way and reaching for Harper’s hand. “Shall we learn some steps, Harper?”

A cascade of giggles followed as she gave in, taking a very simple dance lesson, with Teddy clapping along and taking plenty of video. But it didn’t take long to teach Harper, who had a freakishly sharp mind and remembered every step the first time she was taught. She was literally brimming with raw talent.

By the time Teddy announced it was bedtime, they had a short performance ready to give her mother the next day. Harper made it until nine, but her eyes were heavy, so Eliza went with Teddy to tuck her into a guest room that had enough toys and a table of crafts—many of them from Frozen—that Eliza imagined the kid was a regular.
