Located near each other in the government district, Sandra called Mr. Nguyen to ask if the ladies in his office would watch Phuong while they met with the director of Southeast Asian Immigration.

“Absolutely,” Mr. Nguyen responded.

The office ladies greeted Sandra, Luke, and Phuong. Children were ever-present since their initial visit. Phuong became fast friends, and there was always an immediate reunion. The kids bounced into the conference room with games and toys.

“We never mean to bring chaos to your work,” Luke apologized. “I feel we impose on you too often.”

“No. No. We are happy to have Phuong here. So are the children. Our joy,” the ladies responded.

“When we return, we’ll have ice cream,” Sandra offered. “What does everyone want?” Orders were taken.

Mr. Nguyen is a godsend. Sandra and Luke thanked them for their assistance. Luke crafted a simple compliment. “You are the best. Thanks.”

“We’ll return as soon as we can. It may be an hour, no longer than two,” Sandra promised.

Minutes later, they stood inside the entrance of the director of Southeast Asian Immigration. This place was larger, busier, and more sterile than Mr. Nguyen’s office. Neither fun, nor warm.

“We have an appointment with the director.”

“Yes, Sandra and Luke. It’s my pleasure to meet you. Follow me.” The sharply dressed receptionist led them to the director’s office.

Sandra and the young lady exchanged a conversation. The receptionist spoke of gender issues related to discussions aired on Sandra’s broadcasts. Their conversation was detailed though brief. A personal connection, it seemed. The receptionist disclosed, “You are more vibrant, younger, and much prettier than you appear on television.”

The receptionist’s comment confirmed Luke’s assessment. Sandra possessed poise to lead, spoke well among diverse groups, instilled confidence in listeners, and solved problems. The star of this show? Sandra. No jealousy felt from Luke.

The receptionist announced, “Sir. Sandra and Luke.” They entered.

The corner office was large, with windows that presented a view of the bay. A desk, sofa, bookshelves, cabinets, and a round table with four chairs graced the room. A world map and workroom whiteboard hung on the walls along with photos and artifacts.

“Thank you. Please take a seat.” The director motioned them to the table.

Sandra and Luke noticed another person with a familiar appearance. An Asian woman, with unsightly hair, looked strikingly similar to Mr. Nguyen and the Visitor.

Luke whispered into Sandra’s ear. “This is stereotypically wrong for me to say, but either all Asians look alike or something odd is happening.”

“She looks like Mr. Nguyen, but she’s unpleasant,” Sandra answered.

“Check behind her right ear. If she has a scar, she could be the Visitor’s twin.”

The director moved from behind his desk to the table. Gesturing toward the unknown woman, he said, “This is Ms. Ngo. She’s essential for our discussion.”

As Sandra and Luke shook hands with the woman, Sandra asserted herself. “There’s a person we know. His office is a short distance from here. He looks like you, Ms. Ngo. Thirty or more years older. The two of you have a strong resemblance. Your father?”

“My father is deceased,” Ngo politely replied.
