7 Sprint from the cellblock to the water.

Run past the recreation area to your left and the water tower to your right until you reach the eastern shore of the island, sloping downwards towards the water.

8 Scale the chain-link fence.

9 Dive into the San Francisco Bay.

10 Swim southeast.

Use a powerful crawl stroke and raise your hands as far out of the water as possible with each stroke to overcome the choppy water. The east end of the island does not have any undertow, but the tide can be extremely powerful, depending on the season and time of day.

11 Head for safety.

Swim toward the Golden Gate Bridge, veering to the right towards the shore to avoid being pulled out sea.

12 Arrive on shore.

Be Aware

• The water temperature in the bay averages 42 to 58 degrees Fahrenheit; at those temperatures, the average adult would contract hypothermia in about a half hour. Consider building a life raft and oars from materials such as raincoats, solvent, and brooms.

• When in operation, Alcatraz had a three-to-one guard-to-prisoner ratio, compared to the average federal prison rate of fifteen-to-one.

• Although there are sharks in San Francisco Bay, none are thought to be man-eating species.
