36. Christ Our Lord

The ministry of the Holy Spirit in the Church was central to the teaching of Samuel Howells, but he always reminded the College that the Holy Spirit has been sent to glorify Christ. The relationship of the Trinity working in union is central to the teaching of the Lord (John 8:28, John 12:49, John 14:10), and He explained to the disciples that He would send the Holy Spirit to continue His work on earth (John 16:7). “When He the Spirit of Truth has come He will guide you into all truth, for He will not speak on His own authority, but whatever He hears He will speak and He will tell you things to come. He will glorify Me, for He will take of what is Mine and declare it to you” (John 16:13-14). Samuel once said, “Let us ask the Holy Spirit to help us understand these deep things so that we do not read them superficially.” These were foundational truths in Samuel’s life.

The fruit of all of Samuel’s intercessions were always grounded in Christ’s complete victory over the enemy at Calvary. Christ’s death and resurrection enables the intercessor to exercise authority over the enemy, because Christ, the Intercessor defeated the devil and made a public spectacle of him, and He released this authority to be exercised by His obedient vessels. As Matthew records, the unity of the Trinity is key to Christian discipleship and victory. “All authority has been given to Me in Heaven and on earth. Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptising them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo I am with you always, even to the end of the age” (Matthew 28:18-20).

In one evening meeting, Samuel considered the passages in John 6 where Jesus proclaimed Himself to be the Bread of Life. “A young Man was standing before them and saying, ‘I am the Bread of Life!’ They could not take that without a revelation. The whole world was to be satisfied with His Body. He was Life. Have we come to the position where we never hunger or thirst? Do we day-by-day feed on Him? Has He satisfied us? Ever since last Saturday afternoon, that company on Mount Zion who have followed Him all the way have been in my mind. Those who do not want any relationship but Himself. It is not anything ordinary. It fills our minds, our affections, which have been absorbed in His Person. He becomes all in all.”

Samuel Howells hoped that all students would understand the true meaning of Calvary and continued in the custom passed on to the College family through Rees Howells, where both Easter and Pentecost (Whitsun, as it is also known in Britain) remained very special times. Although no religious fasting period was declared for Lent (the six week period preceding the Easter weekend), Samuel prepared himself
