Chapter 19
Ivy
Ivy stared at the paperwork trying to get Rose out of her mind, but it was impossible. All she could think about was the children and if Al had made any progress on finding them. Sheâd promised to keep Ivy in the loop, and as her phone remained silent, she assumed that meant there had been none, but it didnât keep her from checking the phone every few minutes.
âAmbulance 3. Fire Truck 51. Squad 4. We have a head on collision at 67th and Baker.â
Ivy shoved her phone in her pocket and jogged toward the ambulance bay. Though a head-on collision was bound to be ugly, a part of her was glad for the distraction. The adrenaline would flood her brain and keep her focused on the task at hand instead of the situation she had no control over. She grabbed her gear and climbed up beside Derek, and a moment later, they were roaring down the streets.
The collision had already garnered a lot of attention by the time they arrived, but thankfully the crowd parted for them.
âWhew, I hope you didnât eat before this,â Derek said beside her. âIt looks like a nasty one.â
And it did. A small four-door car had plowed into the back of a Suburban, crumpling the front end like an accordion. It was doubtful anyone in the front of the car had survived, and though it had been hours since Ivy had eaten, her stomach turned anyway. âLetâs focus on who we can save, all right?â
Derek nodded, and they jogged over to the scene to assess it up close.
Ivyâs heart dropped as carseats in the back seat came into view. âOmigosh, there are kids in the back.â She peered in the front of the car, and as expected, it was mangled and bloody. The collision had destroyed the driverâs side window, and she reached in through the opening to check the driver for a pulse. There was nothing. She looked to the woman in the passenger seat, but saw no movement from her either.
Returning her focus to the back seat, she began to assess the situation. Though the seats had been pushed backward, it didnât appear that any of the childrenâs legs were stuck. The boy directly behind the driverâs seat, who appeared to be three or four, turned scared eyes in her direction. âDonât worry,â she said, smiling at him. âWeâre going to get you out.â She tugged on the back door of the car, but it wouldnât budge.
âDerek, can you open the other door? This oneâs stuck.â
Derek, who had been inspecting the suburban, hurried over and tugged on the opposite side before shaking his head. âGonna need the jaws, Ivy. Iâm going to take care of the others.â
Ivy nodded and turned to Luca and Cassidy, who were running over from the fire engine. âWe need the jaws. There are kids in the back here, but the doors are stuck.â
Luca jogged back to grab the device while Cassidy began peering in the windows. âWe need to clear the glass first, so itâs controlled.
