Saban, at the age of fifty-two, had finally made it to the apex of his profession, fulfilling his potential. He was in no mood to enjoy it, though. After the game, he gave Fisher and his staff an earful about the sloppy way the game had ended. (“Some people talk about the joy of victory,” says Searels. “For us, it was more like the relief of victory.”) Saban barely smiled after the win. Weems says he went down to the locker room after the game and found a brooding Saban sitting alone in his dressing room. “I asked him, ‘What’s the matter?’ He says, ‘What am I gonna do now? How am I gonna follow this up?’ ” Saban was already on to the next season. At his postgame press conference just forty-five minutes later, he lamented: “This year’s accomplishments are next year’s expectations.” He was still his father’s son, through and through.
Mauck says as he walked into the locker room after the trophy ceremony, strength coach Tommy Moffitt immediately grabbed him and wide receiver Michael Clayton and said that Saban wanted to see them. “I still had my game pants on,” says Mauck. Clayton was the team’s best receiver, and was expected to forgo his junior year to enter the NFL Draft. Mauck had already graduated but had one year of eligibility left. “We go into Saban’s dressing room, and he’s there all alone. He didn’t say, ‘Good game,’ or anything like that. He just said, ‘I need to know what you guys are doing next year.’ ”
Clayton did indeed choose to leave early, and Mauck decided that he’d had enough of a coach who never seemed to appreciate him, despite his success. He wanted no more run-ins, no more screaming. Mauck says he still has mixed feelings about the coach with whom he won a national championship. “Do I think he’s a great person? No. Do I have a lot of respect for him as a football coach? Yes. Would I let my kid play for him? I don’t know. There’s a lot of shit to go through, but because of football and him, a lot of doors have been opened up for me.”
Mauck was drafted in 2004 by the Denver Broncos and was in the NFL for four years. He is now the Broncos’ team dentist.
