Brandy was the first to speak. She sulked and gulped down the rest of her mimosa.

“Darren and I are getting a divorce.”

Patience and I gasped, and my hand covered my chest before we both jumped up and crowded her—me scooting into their side of the booth and tossing my arms around them.

“Brandy, I’m so sorry!”

I felt like shit for bringing it up. But honestly, I had no idea she would say anything like that. Brandy dropped her face into her hands and wiped away tears that threatened to rain down her cheeks.

“You guys, please. I’ve cried a thousand times. I can’t do it now; I need relief.”

Patience and I loosened our grips, pulling back but not entirely away. “I’m sorry for mentioning it at all.”

Brandy smirked and glanced up at me, then back down to her lap. “It’s not your fault. At least I know we’re really friends when you can tell something is different with me.” She sighed. “I need something else to drink.”

“Ma’am!” I turned and shouted at our server, and she shuffled over to the table. “Can we get refills, please?”

“Mimosas coming right up.”

“Thanks.”

“If you want to change the subject, we absolutely can,” I said.

“Or,” Patience added, “if you want to talk about it, we’re here to listen.”

“Yes.” I nodded.

Brandy sighed and bit her bottom lip. “Three months ago, I had a miscarriage.”

My chest constricted, and I worked overtime not to interrupt her, but my grip around her tightened.

“Oh, my God,” Patience murmured.

“Honey…” We both drew her closer, and tears began to drop down her face.

“I don’t know what happened, and the doctor made it sound like sometimes these things happen without explanation.” She sighed. “My husband couldn’t take that for an answer, and he fell in a sort of depression.”

The server approached with refills, and I hurriedly passed them out.

“Thanks.” Brandy took a big gulp, then continued. “Over the next week or so, our relationship became strained. We barely talked. We absolutely didn’t talk about the loss, and I felt like he might’ve blamed me.”

My gut tightened even more.

“I needed him back.” She glanced up at me, and I nodded in understanding. “I needed him to be my husband again. I just needed him, so I did something I thought he might enjoy. Something that would lift his spirits and at least make him appreciative of me.”

Patience glanced at me, then asked, “What did you do?”

Brandy was silent, and my gut began to churn, but I was drawing a blank.

“I invited another woman into our bedroom.”

Gasps flew from Patience and me.

“Oh, no…” Patience murmured.

More tears fell from Brandy’s eyes. “I thought it would make him happy or at least lift his spirits. I don’t know! I was grasping for straws.”

“What happened?”

Brandy glanced at Patience, considering the question she’d asked.

“His spirits were lifted, but mine were not. Do you know what it feels like to watch someone you love enjoy sex with another human that is not you? Someone you’ve vowed to love and cherish. Someone you’re thoroughly committed to?”

The pain in her eyes, in her voice, was about all I could take.
