CHAPTER FOURTEEN
The compressed air sent the grappling hook soaring towards its target. The hooks wrapped around the edge of the gun deck. Emma gave it a sharp tug, making sure the hooks would not slip and that the cable would support her weight.
She signaled to Kierian. Without delay, he pulled the pins of the smoke bombs and lobbed them onto either end of the main deck.
Emma stood, unfolded two wooden handles from the barrel of the CAVAT, and pressed a button. The cable retracted and hauled Emma skyward towards the ironclad. Once she cleared the edge of the ship, she swung her legs forward, released the button, and dropped softly to the main deck below.
White smoke billowed from the canisters at the far ends of the vessel and enveloped Emma. She lowered her goggles, drew her revolvers, and threw herself prone, upon the wooden deck. Any pirates, who were hiding in ambush, would now have to content themselves with blasting away with un-aimed and inaccurate fire.
She aimed her pistols at the center of the cloud. Her eyes scanned the smoke just above deck level, for any sign of moving feet. Seconds passed, but it seemed like an eternity, as she waited for the maelstrom of deadly lead to pour through the air
Her heart rate increased, a spike of adrenaline ripped through her body. She took a deep calming breath, and fought back the temptation to blast away into the cloud to draw fire and initiate battle.
Patience, Prudence. Force the fight, your funeral pyre they will light.
A minute passed with agonizing slowness. The loon, once more, softly sang its eerie nighttime lullaby.
I canât wait forever. The smoke will dissipate soon and I need to get Kierian and Balthazar on board.
Emma stood, holstered her pistols, snatched the CAVAT, and tossed it back down to the rowboat. Moments later, Kierian and Dr. Waatt boarded. RA-7 stayed behind in the rowboat. The Rescue Automaton was about as useful in combat as a wooden frying pan was for cooking. There was a good possibility blood would yet be shed, and RAY hated the sight of the stuff. Anytime he saw a sufficient quantity he would fly into a screaming panic, throw his arms in the air, and run off in the opposite direction as fast as he could. Emma shook her head. She understood why Balthazar had created RAY with a âlearning mindâ but why he thought including emotion prudent, she could not fathom.
Kierian took the lead, his Winchester pump at the ready. He climbed up a small ladder to the gun deck, and trotted directly to the stern weapons where the two bodies RA-7 had seen, laid sprawled upon the deck.
âNeither of these are the sports, or Professor Boaltt.â
âWhat is the cause of death?â Dr. Waatt asked.
âA gunshot to the head on this one,â Kierian turned the second body over on its back, "and a knife wound to the chest on the second.â
He rose and motioned with a hand signal that their next target would be the pilothouse perched atop the armored citadel.
