Chapter 10

Dawn was breaking over Christ Church Meadow, lighting up the fiery red leaves of the woodbine creeping up the honey-coloured stonework of the Meadow Building and the long green grass of the pasture where Longhorn cattle grazed. Tim’s features were also illuminated, his brow furrowed, his chin resting on a hand, as he sat leant forward on an old wooden bench. He was unusually still, and at a glance one might have thought a new sculpture of The Thinker had sprung up overnight in the centre of Oxford.

He’d woken in the early hours of the morning and, having been unable to find comfort in sleep again, had eventually given up, got out of bed and gone for a walk.[43] He’d let his legs carry him wherever they would, and he’d found himself walking past the meadow just as a groundsman was opening up the gates in preparation for the early-bird rowers heading to the boathouses.

A thousand colours danced across the sky as the sun rose — pale pinks twirling with yellows, blues being lifted upwards with bold oranges — but Tim saw none of it. He was swirling around in his own thoughts. One moment the world was dim, with the morning twilight only a faint glimmer in the distance, then he blinked, and all was bright around him.

He got up, a statue no more, and headed for the gates of St Dwynwen’s.
