Chapter 6

Cool drops of rain began to fall as John dismissed his unit after a morning briefing. Thunder rumbled low in the distance. He slung his weapon over his shoulder and watched his men disband. Some headed for the boats, some drove away in trucks, and others took off on foot. Another typical day on the lake. Supplies needed to be dispersed, messages delivered, outside communications monitored, and a number of other random duties. Even though it was raining, John planned to check the security fence. He turned to walk east through the forest, only to discover Luke and Martin had lingered to pelt him with good-natured questions about married life.

How’s Emma? Have you tamed Emma yet? Has Emma managed to run away yet? So, did Emma kick you in the balls before or after you consummated the marriage?

John wanted to punch them both in the face.

As luck would have it, Martin had witnessed the spectacle of Emma’s attempted escape a few days ago. While he had not witnessed Emma kicking John in the groin, he surmised it by the way John had adjusted himself as he bolted outside in nothing but a pair of boxers. At least no one else had witnessed his little disagreement with his wife.

“If either of you two numbskulls tell anyone about what happened, I’ll assign you to work in the gardens with the women for the next five years.” John gave them a murderous look, and both men fell silent at his threat.

The day dragged on and on, but John did not avoid his duties. The safety of the settlement, of all the men, women, and children, rested on his shoulders. A few units of Free Island soldiers had banded together in the mountains, but John was the senior unit commander. Unless General Ying sauntered up the mountain with his heated tent and fragrant cigars, John was the undisputed leader. He knew this might change after the war officially ended. Regions would likely be divided, and whatever government formed would require elections. Following his father around the islands had given him the unique opportunity to see the ugly underbelly of politics, and he had no taste for it.

The rain soaked John to the bone. It began to fall in sheets by late afternoon. He spent most of the day traveling to various checkpoints to test the security fence surrounding the settlement. The thick forest did not allow for a vehicle to pass easily through these particular sections, so he made the journey on foot until he completed his work. Other men had been assigned to other sections. Breaches in the fence were rare and none had been made recently, but John would not risk the chance that a group of American soldiers would try to blast their way inside. The invisible fence was strong, but it was not indestructible. An attack occurring at the same time as a power fluctuation opened a small hole large enough for a man to enter.

As he ventured from checkpoint to checkpoint, John’s thoughts strayed to Emma.
