CHAPTER 12

DAHLIA

I pinched the bridge of my nose to stave off the pain growing behind my eyes. Not sure what the hell was going on, but my eyes burned, ached, and I had a hard time focusing on the road. “This vision jumped around. It was hard to understand what was happening when the scene shifted drastically. The first thing I saw was the goddess Athena talking to us. We were in the back acre that’s completely overgrown. She said an Object of Power like she was gifting us was a huge responsibility, and she would not hesitate to take the book away should we prove incapable of protecting it.”

Dre sat forward and stuck her head between the seats. “What do you mean? We can keep a book safe. And we can ward the hiding spot we select for it.”

Kota turned in her seat so she was facing me with her back to the door. “I can’t believe we’re going to summon a goddess. We should keep it hidden in the attic. It's the safest place in the house.” Kota’s eyes flared, and a tiny gasp escaped her. “What do we wear? We can’t wear these clothes to meet a goddess. I think this qualifies for me conjuring what we want to wear without the personal gain issue, right?”

A chuckle left me despite the ache building behind my eyes. “According to my vision, you conjure us some designer dresses and shoes, but it’s not necessary. Her statement to us was clear. The goddess respects strength. Although she was wearing a long, white chiton clipped over her right shoulder with a stunning owl broach that looked like it was made of enchanted gold. It was lit from within and emanated power.”

“You didn’t want us to tell Kaitlyn so we could keep it safe, right?” Dani asked. She probably knew me the best out of all my sisters, with Kota right after her.

I nodded and turned down the road leading to the plantation. “In a roundabout way, yes. I didn’t see how it happened, but Kaveh teleported us into absolute chaos. The witches in the coven were fighting on Kaitlyn’s front lawn. Mundie police officers lay dead in pools of their own blood. More than one paranormal met the same fate with Kaitlyn among them. Kaveh lost it when he saw Kaitlyn with her neck broken. One of Kaveh’s djinn teleported in when she felt her leader’s distress and was caught off-guard and killed. To my surprise, Athena, the witch, stood on Kaitlyn’s porch holding our grimoire. She was behind the entire thing.”

“What the hell? None of us would ever tell that woman anything. We don’t know her from Adam.” Dre wasn’t wrong, which is what had me confused. There should have been no way for her to know about the book. Even our girls knew they should never talk about it.

Flicking on my blinker, I turned into our parking lot. “They looked for information about how to overthrow the head witch and claim her position and power.
