Chapter 9

Amelia

Stéphanie must have heard my exclamation of dismay when Damien returned not only with the horses, but with his friends from the lodge in tow. “Oh, Léandre’s not all that bad,” Stéphanie said. “I know he comes across like a jerk, but he’s okay once you know how to take him. He’s been a loyal friend to Damien, and sometimes he’s a lot of fun.”

Emerson made a noise in his throat. “He rides like he thinks he’s a prince, or something.”

Stéphanie choked on the soda she was drinking. “Well, he came into a big estate very young, but he doesn’t have much to do with running it. I think that’s part of his problem. He just has a lot of growing up to do.”

“Sounds like too much money and too much time,” Harper murmured, and I nodded in agreement. People could say what they wanted about my grandmother’s stinginess, but at least she’d forced me to take responsibility.

“His mother has control of his funds,” Stéphanie added. “If she cut him off, maybe he’d change. Look, let’s talk about it later. I don’t want Damien to hear us. He knows Léandre has problems, but they go way back.”

Damien came to a stop and dismounted. “Look who I ran into.” His smile didn’t reach his eyes, and I felt better knowing he wasn’t happy about the intrusion either. He made the introductions quickly before asking me, “Can I help you up?”

I didn’t need help, but I wasn’t going to turn him down, not with that pipsqueak staring at him with her vulture eyes. “Your mother lent me some old boots because I left my shoes near the back door last night and the sprinklers got them.”

He grimaced as he glanced down. “She lent you those old things?”

“Come on. They’re perfect. And very comfortable.”

As if unable to resist, he leaned forward and gave me a quick kiss. Behind him, I caught a glimpse of Bridgit glaring at me. Okay. That was one girl I wasn’t going to win over.

After boosting me onto my horse, Damien went to help Stéphanie tuck our lunches into their saddlebags. They ended up going inside for additional food because of Léandre and Bridgit, so while we waited for them, Harper moved her horse closer to mine.

“Mmm, that kiss . . . looks like things are going well between you and Damien. I saw the palace you two were building last night. You must have been up for hours.”

“I do like him—a lot,” I admitted. “I never imagined when we came here that I’d meet someone like Damien. It seems like I’ve known him for months, but it’s only been, what, four days—and you can’t really count our first meeting.”

Harper smirked. “He was half naked. We can definitely count it. The question is, how does he make you feel?”

“Well, sometimes it’s as comfortable as being with Emerson, but”—I heaved sigh—“there’s so much more to it.”

Like how I could drown in his kisses and never come up for air. Like how I wanted to forget my upcoming job or going back to America.
