Harris had one thing right. Meeting Rage would spur a cascade of reactions from Clayton, and I didn’t have time for any of them. My least favorite trait about Clayton had to be his inability to take action. He debated over every decision, and his procrastination (though he never called it that) often led to knee-jerk reactions. A good business couldn’t operate reactively, there had to be some semblance of proactive planning.

That was the one thing Harris had wrong. Clayton didn’t push me out of the business because he didn’t want to learn my wood-working techniques, he’d pushed me away because I wanted to do business right. I’d taken college classes about business, and while I didn’t have my full degree, it made me think differently. My insistence on a plan had bothered Clayton.

If there was anything I hated, it was being a bother.

Clayton clapped eyes on me and spoke before he thought. “Damn! You been working out, Lisa?”

That deserved my own knee-jerk reaction, but I refrained. The fact was I had dropped weight because I wasn’t eating like I normally did. Or maybe it was the stress. Most likely a little of both.

“Howdy to you, too, Clayton. How about you wait in the truck, and I’ll walk Harris out to you.”

“What are you hiding?” he demanded.

Well, shit.

I’d spent three years with Clayton. We never moved in together… he was far more religious than I was – though he indulged in premarital sex, so maybe not that religious. Still, after three years of exclusivity, he knew my tells.

“I’m not hiding anything.”

“She’s hiding me. But you should think of it as protecting you. Though why she’d do that is anyone’s guess,” Rage said from behind me.

I glanced over my shoulder to find him closer than expected.

“Who the fuck is he?” Clayton asked.

“Nearly what I said,” Harris chirped.

I closed my eyes, bowed my head, and braced myself for what would inevitably be a showdown. My eyes flew open when a heavy arm rested on my shoulders. I whipped my head around to find Rage standing at my side, smiling at Clayton.

Smiling, full-on, outright!

“What are you doing?” I muttered my question.

He swiveled that smile to me and I wanted to melt.

I had to be wrong about him moving. Rage needed to move and find the woman who could make him smile like that at least once a day. Because the vision of Rage with a smile on his face… it was a picture of joy personified. With his long, sun-kissed light brown hair and golden eyes, he reminded me of one of my favorite rock drummers.

Thoughts of rock-and-roll fled when Rage said, “I’m pulling double-duty, baby. Helping your mentor, Harris make his way out here, and protecting you.”

“Protecting her from what?” Clayton asked, his tone snotty.

“You,” Harris said.

Rage twisted his free hand up toward Clayton in agreement with Harris’s word.

Clayton shook his head. “She don’t need protection from… You’re with a biker?”

I felt my expression fall, but Rage got there first.

“Her brother’s a
