Scarlett was still crying on her bed when she heard someone come into her room. She looked up to see Dylan standing over her.
“He lied to me. Of all the people in the entire world, Isaac Coleman was the one who broke my trust. I’ve confided everything in him, knowing that he didn’t care, but just needing someone to talk to. Now I don’t know what to think of him.”
Scarlett sat up and motioned for Dylan to sit beside her. She wiped her eyes then smiled at him, placing her hand on his shoulder.
“You can trust me,” she said. She heard a bird caw in the distance, and she let out another tear. “It’s going to be okay.”
“Thank you.” Dylan stood up. “Wait. Raven mentioned something about us being banshees? Why don’t we go figure out what she was talking about.”
“And how do you suppose we do that?”
“I bet you didn’t know there was a library in here. It’s kind of small but I’m sure we could find something somewhere about banshees.”
“Lead the way.”
Scarlett followed Dylan down a few hallways. Right, left, left, right, then left again. “How do you know where we’re going?”
“Isaac never cared where I went. He always said I was the most normal one here so he would let me do whatever I wanted. But that was probably to his benefit somehow, considering he’s a lying traitor.”
“Let’s not jump to conclusions. We can give him a second chance.”
Dylan stopped walking. “No. He’s already had his second chance and he blew it. He’s not getting another.”
“Well we should make a rule that all hot guys in leather jackets get a third chance.”
Dylan rolled his eyes and started walking again, not saying anything. After a few more turns, they reached the door to the library.
“Let’s go find out what the hell is wrong with us,” Scarlett said, stepping in front of Dylan to push the doors open. They were wooden and heavy, seeming as if they didn’t belong in this era. Scarlett immediately noticed the dank scent surrounding everything. The entire library, which was only around ten bookshelves half-filled with books, was coated with a thick layer of dust.
“It looks like no one’s been in here for quite some time,” she said, covering her nose and mouth with her hand.
“Are you going to search for a book or just stand there?” Dylan asked, already walking toward the nearest bookshelf.
“Well I would rather just stand here, but I guess we need to find out what we are. What banshees are,” Scarlett said as she walked to the side of the room opposite Dylan.
They searched through the books for what seemed like hours in total silence. At some point, the sound of turning pages seemed almost soothing. Scarlett and Dylan approached the last shelf at the same time. It was empty.
“Great! There’s nothing here. I guess we’ll never know what we are.” Dylan sank to the floor. Scarlett sat down next to him, gently placing her hand on his thigh.
