Axel awoke to Walsh gently shaking him and removing the IV from his arm. “Good as new, boss.”
Axel eased himself into a sitting position. “How long was I out?”
“About six hours. And between you and me, boss, that Melinda is very interested in your health.”
“I’m sure she is very concerned.” Axel knew she was only interested in his survival as it related to her business opportunities back on Earth.
“I heard her say something about getting rid of us freeloaders if we don’t fix something. What’s that all about? If you don’t mind me asking.”
“Don’t worry about it.” He flexed the arm where he was shot. It felt as though nothing had happened. Medical tech had come a long way since the Solar War. That, or America had finally spent some money on some decent gear.
“Where’s Minick?”
“She’s outside. Want me to get her?”
“Yeah. Just her, though.”
A few moments later, Walsh returned with Lieutenant Minick. She was drinking coffee and gnawing on a bagel. Walsh collected his gear and left.
“We’re going to go meet with a good cop this morning,” said Axel. “I want you and three others to come along and be prepared to intervene if things go south. After last night, I’m not taking any chances.”
“Roger that, boss.”
“What happened with those Japanese inspectors on the news?”
“They went to a mining operation to conduct an audit or inspection for the commission. A gunfight broke out and they vanished.”
“Any response from the UN or the Japanese government?”
“Nothing, other than saber rattling.”
“What about the commission? Any news while I was out getting my ass kicked by some neon killer woman?”
A killer woman who had no heat signature but somehow registered a heartbeat. Squibs did neither. Humans had both. If she’d been wearing some sort of heat signature shielding, there would have been no discernible heartbeat. The question of what she was niggled at Axel.
Minick suppressed a smile. “They deliver their verdict tomorrow morning.”
None of this made an ounce of sense to Axel. There were connections everywhere, but few if any crystalized in his head. He got out of bed and stretched.
“Sir,” asked Minick. “What’s the mission at this point? If Winfield doesn’t want to come back with us, aren’t we in danger staying here, waiting to get blown up? If we get sold out to the UN, we risk exposing America as running an off-planet black op.”
“You’re right and that’s an excellent question. My orders are to convince him to come home. I’m not allowed to just bash him over the head and drag him back. He has to want to come with us. I know that’s looking less and less likely by the minute, but if we can show him that America isn’t some low-rent country anymore…” He looked over to her. “It’s apparent no one takes us seriously. Not even our own citizens. We may have to show force to earn respect. And right now, it is a matter of finding the right target to eliminate and convince Winfield we’re not the laughingstock he thinks we are.
