CHAPTER

TWENTY-TWO

Why can’t anything ever be normal? I loose a breath, cracking my neck as Riker’s gaze finds mine. Why can’t he have just been a friendly doctor, or at the very least, up front about who he was?

“There’s no need for any of that, cupcake,” he says mildly, glancing over his shoulder. “I’m not your enemy. Ty isn’t either, though he was out of line earlier.”

“Who are you?” Riker’s still, and anyone else might think he’s relaxed. But I can tell he’s just as on edge as I am, my pulse thumping against my neck.

“I’m the ship’s doctor.” He shrugs, putting the wand away before running a careful finger over Riker’s now healed hand. “I’m also in charge around here, but I stay out of the bridge and in the med bay.” He stands, smiling at us. “I’m no good at piloting ships. Especially ones like this. The name’s Lidoz, but I’m fine if you want to keep calling me doc.”

I lick my lips and edge closer to Riker.

The doc, Lidoz, pats his tight shorn curls and sighs. “I’m not going to hurt you. I hope you’re not going to hurt me, either,” he says. “I sent Ty away as a show of good faith. Riker, Caro, I know what you two have sacrificed, unwillingly, to be here right now. The last thing I want is to force either of you to do anything you don’t want.”

I glance at Riker out of the corner of my eye. His big hand finds mine, strong fingers curling around it before he squeezes, gently. His gaze never leaves Lidoz, like the older man presents some sort of threat to us.

I don’t like this, but if Lidoz wanted to hurt me? He’s had plenty of opportunity.

I clear my throat, pushing my hair out of my face. “Then why are we here? What do you want with us?”

Lidoz looks amused, his gaze darting between us: me, standing protectively near Riker, and him sitting on the cot, a bemused expression on his face.

“I want to work with you, of course.”

I open my mouth to object, but he holds up a hand and shakes his head before I can start.

“Now, now, I don’t want to put you on the spot right now. I meant it when I said I wasn’t going to force either of your hands on turning Syndicate, though you’ve been a good mole for us for a long time, now Riker, I realize your priorities have shifted.”

“My priorities have always and only been protecting Caro,” he growls, tugging me closer.

Lidoz’s gaze turns sad. “And I wish we could have done more. There are so many things I wish we could have done differently.” He sighs again, placing the wand back in a small bag of equipment.

“Be that as it may, ripping you out of Impericorps control is a feat unto itself, Caro. And while I would love nothing more than to put your skills to use for the sake of the entire Rim, I won’t stoop so low as to guilt or coerce you into it.
